Sounds like a simple case of slipping fan belt, but it could possibly be the starter gear sticking in place and being spun up by the engine.
If it hasn't had one a new belt wouldn't hurt, give you a chance to spin the pulleys and see if everythings tickety boo.
If that's not the obvious problem then removing the starter would be my next move and see whats happening when you operate it on the bench....seeing as you've already smelled burning, your nose should lead.
