Subaru Legacy - New diesel - first oil change advice - Rustyw

My dealer recommends an oil change after the first thousand miles. I think I recollect reading here that such an early oil change is not a good idea but I cannot remember why. Sorry if this is covering old ground.

What advice is written in the handbook, that should give chapter and verse of what's needed.

Subaru recommend a 1000 mile oil and filter change. Failing to have this done will invalidate your engine warranty.

In the past the initial fill of oil was specifically to aid 'running-in' - I don't know if this is still the case but it needs the oil change done regardless.

That's odd no mention of a 1000 mile oil and filter change in my documentation.

Just the first service at 12000.

I was advised and Honest John has done a feature about not changing the oil early to aid the bedding in process.

Left mine till 12000 but now do oil and filter changes at 6000.

82000 miles later no oil consumption and seems to get better as the miles increase.

My 2006 2.5 petrol Outback (lifted Legacy) had a free 1,000 mile service and then annually or 12,000 miles whichever came first.

I certainly subscribe to the theory of letting the factory fill do it's job until the first scheduled service - if Subaru don't currently REQUIRE an oil change at 1,000 miles you're best to leave it until the 12 months or 12,000 miles comes around.
