On my 1995 petrol passat (in an attempt to fit a starter button) I mistakenly linked the ignition live with the outer (earth?) of the immobiliser cable which leads down from the ignition switch. the car will fire up but then stops immediately. What bit am I likely to have damaged? As any expert can tell I should never have started but all help will be much appreciated. the idea of the starter button (now not connected) was because the final turn in the key to operate the starter appeared to be getting touch and go. It still works the starter. thanks in advance.

It is not clear exactly what you have shorted but is sounds as if you have burntout the earth return for the immobiliser so that cable and may be more will have to be replaced. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter. How do I check that the earth return is damaged?

My similar vintage passat needed a new ignition switch. Never thought to install a starter button, though i should have! I got a new switch from GSF for a fiver or so.

I would think that shorting a live to earth would blow a fuse before actually damaging any wiring.

If the engine runs even for a moment that would seem to indicate the ignition system, ECU, etc, is OK.

Perhaps like the fuel pump is priming but not pumping when engine is running? Do you hear the priming sound when you turn the key?

You might need to get yourself some wiring diagrams...
