Avensis 2.0 vvti reliability - any Opinons/comment - Surrey_Scientist

I am considfering buying an Avensis estate (or possibly a honda accord)

it will be an automatic model, so would come with the 2.0 vvti engine ( I've not seen any 1.8auto estates advetised anywhere)

My budget is at the "cheaper" end of the market so most of the cars I've seen advertised have close to 100,000 miles.

DOes anyone have any comments about the reliability of these engines (or the auto gearboxes come to that !) ?

I know there is an oil-consumption problem which sems to affect 1.8vvtis and I have heard of people having this prob with the 2.0s -

How common is it and are there any other issues, or should I be considering a different vehicle ?

Are these engines good for bigger mileages - I would be intending to keep the vehicle for a long period of time (as I have done withmy previous vehicles)

I have noticed alot of avensis in use as minicabs now (which I would consider a good sign) - does anyone now which they go for ?

I curently have an18yo Corola which has 160,000 on the clock and still uses virtually no oil/water, but its too small for my current needs so I wish to trade up to an automatic large-ish estate

Take a look on the Toyota owner's club forums, lots of experience there. My 2005 Avensis 1.8 didn't burn oil, but it had lots of niggles. It wasn't quite the flawless Toyota experience I was expecting, that's for sure.

I haven't had mine long enough (1.8 vvti) to give you an honest answer, but my dad has had his for 4+ years, also a 1.8vvti, and the only thing that's gone wrong was the electric fuel filler cap. Very strong cars. I saw one in a mag where the guy had done 200000 miles, that was the old shape - the only thing of note was a gearbox rebuild at 150000, not a disaster.

I would go for the 1.8 because the bigger engine doesn't really make that much difference to the performance and it's thirstier. As far as I know, the oil consumption problem was sorted post 2003.

The important thing is to choose a car with FSH and looks likes it's been well cared for, the least number of owners e.t.c

There is a similar thread in the archives here. As I wrote there, I had a 2002 1.8vvti Avensis that did develop the oil consumption problem at 50K miles, the typical milestone for the problem to occur. Toyota were excellent, they replaced the engine FOC! I would say post 54 cars were sorted and any prior to this either had the engine sorted or didn't have the problem. If a car you look at has done in excess of 50K I would suggest you're OK. As previously mentioned though, check out the Toyota owners forum.

With any auto with a few miles on the clock I'd have the transmission serviced by a specialist such as Stephens Engineering, if it was sound when you bought it, a service should mean it'll last the life of the car - this includes the many so called "sealed for life" 'boxes which usually means "sealed for death" if you don't get them serviced. Don't trust your dealer to service the autobox - they won't know what they're doing.
