peugeot 406 2 ltr diesel - debris in low pressure fuel pump filter - alannora

my garage has noted metal debris in this filter bowl and is fortelling serious future failure and expence though the car at 100,000 is currently operating faultlessly. I do not push the car's performance, normally using cruise control at 70 mph and at 30 or 40 in built-up areas. Can I take any pre-emptive action to allieviate or prevent trouble. I believe the high pressure pump and injectors are in danger or even already going over.

The debris probably originates from the electric fuel lift pump in the tank. 100k miles is longer than most of these pumps last and I would change it now as a precaution. Failure means breakdown.

Be very careful indeed how you or a garage dismantles the fuel filter. If incorrectly done, the metal frag caught within the housing can enter the engine driven high pressure pump when the element is removed. This will cause terminal damage.

I recommend taking the fuel filter off the car complete with its housing and either replacing the lot, or dismantling it carefully on the bench following careful draining. Absolutely scrupulous cleanliness is needed.

The European directive banning filters with integral cans has resulted in the destruction of many diesel fuel systems due to the entry of debris. Political meddling by those with no specialist knowledge...
