Article in the German press today states that the EU in Brussels have passed a new regulation to come into effect in 2013 which by todays prices would increase the price of diesel fuel by 79cents a litre,Because city air is getting dirtier its an effort to stop people using diesel fuel. Also being discussed is bringing the tolls for cars into effect here in Germany along with a speed limit on autobahns after the horrendous crash by Rostock.

I bet this won't affect commercial vehicles, taxis and so on.

Its for all diesel fuel regardless of it use.

I know here in Germany we use very few diesel buses most run on gas most cities also have a good U bahn system and you cannot drive into a lot of city centres if your car does not have the green sticker on the windscreen. The logic behind it is to achieve the clean regulations, the powers in the EU will have us back in the dark ages before long.

Clean regulations? I think alot of people in Governments etc, banging on about clean air regulations and health issues created by the use of vehicles need to pick up a history book and discover what it was like before the invention of the car. When crowded cities used horses, there was s*** everywhere, disease was a daily occurance and life expectancy was low. So to now criticise the car, a major advancement in public health, for causing health problems, is a bit rich im afraid.

Basically the EU is meddling in things that shouldn't concern it. A 60 pence rise in the price of a litre of diesel would destroy thousands of taxi and coach firms and in France, where 60 pc of cars are diesel, would cause civil unrest.

I think this is the newspaper article in question.

Looks like it's only proposed legislation, nothing has been passed.

I think it would add about 10p on to the price of a litre of diesel in the UK (currently fuel duty is the same for petrol and diesel). In most other EU countries the duty on diesel is less than the duty on petrol, so those countries would see a much bigger change.
