I've got £4,ooo and a tired 1990 205.
Should I buy a Mondeo or SAAB 900?
I'm thinking the Ford may have cheaper parts/servicing costs but the SAAB may be better built.
Any thoughts out there in Honestjohnland?

I assume you are talking about the 93-98 model 900. Although made in the usual solid swedish style, it is not generally recognised as a good car to drive. It is however strong, secure and long lasting. It will feel more solid than the Mondeo. In the long term, the costs will not necessarily be greater than the Ford's, as long as you are prepared to go outside the dealer network (no problem, as there is a well-established collection of Saab specialists around the UK), and potentially use second-hand spares where safety is not involved. You will certainly get a newer Mondeo for your money. See the car-by-car breakdown on this site for more info. There is also a Saab owners club, have a look at their site & you'll get a feel of problem areas, and you might even find a car!
You would be better off with a Saab 9000, as this is a much better car and similarly priced second hand. It is bigger, with much more room inside, and is a nicer drive.

or buy an good old shape 900 for £1500.00, keep a grand in the bank for repairs and pocket the difference.

Mondeo.
Sorry it's not very objective, but when I don't have a lot to use as actual logical reasons for getting the Mondy over the Saab, I just have to give my opinion. :)
Oh wait I've got one now. The Mondy looks nice, whereas the Saab looks...er... not nice.

I have just bought a Mondeo ST24 it is T reg with 22,000 on the clock,it cost me £5800 and all I can say is i am very impressed with the Mondeo.
With this engine it is a bit thirsty but i would still recomend one to anybody, and it looks 100 times better than a Saab.
Anyway best of luck maybe take a drive in a few then you will know which is best for you.

People who drive SAABs are usually more interesting. But an objective test would favour the Mondeo.

I've been thinking of a succinct reply to this one for a while. Last year I was in a very similar position. I had £5000 and a tired and slightly bent Honda Civic.
I needed a reliable and comfortable car that wouldn't cost a fortune to run for 20-25k miles a year. I fancied a 900, looked at a few but was generally disappointed with them. They didn't feel that special - too much Cavalier in the new ones, and too many years under the "real" old-shape ones.
I bought a Mondeo and am very impressed with its mile-eating abilities. The aircon pump failure wasn't so impressive, but otherwise great.
