A relative who works in the BBC buildings (not for the BBC) often admires a stunning new Ferrari 599 GTO parked in isolation near the goods despatch area. It belongs to a well known tv and radio presenter, who owns several classic Ferraris (you probably know who this is).

It was only after about the fifth time of admiring the car that he realised it has no front-number plate, only the rear (personalised) one. The famous owner simply pays the £60 fine everytime he's caught - there's no points attached to this offence. It also means he can ignore Gatso average speed cameras.

To avoid naming and shaming im going to refer to this famous person as 'the man on the one show'.

There, cryptic, wink wink. Nobody will ever guess.

'Man on One Show' does love his Ferrari's and if he's got £60 to waste everyday (i doubt you can drive into London with all their police and cameras and not get seen) then thats up to him. If ever anybody needed to find it, a 599 GTO with private plate only on the rear shouldnt be too difficult to find LOL

I think a well known, foul mouthed chef has the same forgetfulness with his Ferrari front plate. Although ISTR it is only a £30 fine and no points.

Unless plod gets fed up and gets the DVLA to take the plate back and issue a Q plate.

He's probably just forgot, being busy and all that. Do him a favour and paint it on the bonnet for him! ;-)

It'll hide the scratches another (so called) personality left on it.

I'm reliably told they've been polished out and the 599 looks pristine again. I wonder how much the Mini driver paid for that. Hopefully enough to keep her quiet for 10mins or so.

It also has a child booster seat in it. Ferrari 599 GTO - hypercar and family wagon. Who'd have thunk it?

"It also has a child booster seat in it. Ferrari 599 GTO - hypercar and family wagon. Who'd have thunk it?"-

My mate has two child seats in the back of his 612 Scaglietti. Not sure if they will fit in his soon arrriving 458, and his missus is now expecting a third!!!. Don't think Ferrari have ever done an MPV!.

What if someone repeatedly fails to display any number plate, front or rear - surely that won't just attract repeated £60 fines.

Arguably failure to display a front number plate makes a vehicle unroadworthy in a legal sense, and so the driver could be prosecuted for driving a vehicle in an unroadworthy condition.

Is one's insurance invalidated if the vehicle does not display relevant plates .... if so, how many points does driving without insurance attract? Or is it confiscation of vehicle? Or perhaps a MOT failure and banning from public roads.

Seroiusly, there is something wrong with a system whereby the super rich can ignore the law by just paying fines that are less than petty cash to them.

"Is one's insurance invalidated if the vehicle does not display relevant plates ..?"

If you have insurance, you always have the third party cover regardless of what you do to your car, due to recent EU Insurance rules harmonisation.

That's not to say there aren't other disadvantages such as no cover for your losses and the possibility of having insured losses claimed back from you if you breached the contract, but for number plates this doesn't apply.

Indeed. But surely the most pertinent point is that the car cannot be tagged on Gatso average speed zones. If you get snapped speeding through that, you get points and a fine. But not for this particular vehicle.

Plus most Gatso's are rear only. Some though have a second front facing slave unit. Easier to just register it to a fake name / address...so I'm told..

Agree with smileyman above. In some areas it effectively makes the wealthy above the law if they choose to be.
