Peugeot 106 diesel 1997 - Front brakes sticking - Need help desperately - RWright

I have had this car since it was 2 years old, and the brakes have cost me more than everything else put together. Now I am really desperate to know what to do. I don’t know much about cars but need help knowing where to go from here.

I hardly use the car from April to August every year, which may be part of the problem. I only do 3000 miles per year total, on quiet roads so not much braking.

The front nearside brake is jamming yet again. I had it serviced and freed off a week ago (they cleaned up and greased the piston sliders). It always happens at the beginning of a journey, and always can be freed by hard braking, but the wheel gets very hot. It then cools off and is fine for the rest of the day.

It has just passed it’s MOT, and has new exhaust, tyres and battery (had to to keep my job – I only use it to get to work). Given I will only get scrap value if I sell it now, I am trying to get it through the summer, with the hope of doing one more winter before giving in. It is a great little car in every other respect and has only minimal corrosion. I don’t feel I can try sell it without telling someone the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else could be wrong, or how I can stop it jamming ? The fact that it only happens at the beginning of journeys would seem to rule out anything else like the brake pipes ?

I cannot afford to keep spending money on it, but don’t seem to have any options.

If anyone has any advice I would be really grateful. Or even any advice on how to stop it happening with my next car.

I suspect the pistons are sticking. And the low mileage rather rusty discs are knocking back the pistons after a couple of miles. You either need to have the seals repalced or the complete caliper and probably the disc's as well. Regards Peter

I have had the same problem with my 406 only it was a back brake, its certainly not lack of miles with mine as its done over 190k, I suspect it is with yours though, mine was very rusty underneath at the back when I got it so I suspect that it has been driven on the motorway a lot in the winter and its salt damage, it had certainly corroded the brakes. I managed to free mine off and run some brake fluid under the seal to lubricate the piston but it started sticking again so I have had to replace the caliper.

By not using the car from April to August means the winter's salt build up sits in every crevice and bakes to hard crust all summer long, little wonder your brakes seize up, i'd be surprised if it had an original brake pipe left on it. Most cars would get driven through the wet spring weather which would help the salt get washed off.

Rainwater splash is about the only underbody maintenance the average car gets these days with bone idle car owners who never think of cleaning off the winter's crud when the salt has gone.

For this car it's probably a case of getting the calipers cleaned and working again, and that includes cleaning and lubricating any sliding mechanism as well as the pistons,.

Other than that give the poor car a good wash underneath to get the salt out...sheesh.

Thank you all for your help.

I did not say that I never cleaned the underside of the car ! I do, regularly. Not that the roads I am driving on see a lot of salt.

Flexi brake hose common problem on under used cars they break down inside and act like a one way valve.

Thanks. Would that clear up after 10 miles or so though ? The thing is it rarely happens on return journeys. Gets very hot, then unsticks in the first few miles, then cools off and is fine after that.

When the brakes stick open the bleed screw on the caliper and close it again if fluid squirts out and the brakes free up this will rule out a caliper/ piston sticking problem and you need to look elsewhere pipes/master cylinder.

Meant also to tell you to check that the brake light switch is not hoding the pedal slighty down, altough that normally would cause the brakes to bind with use, rather than at the start of a journey but worth a look anyway
