Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi - White/grey smoke on startup or after idling - jonny10buds

I have a recently purchased a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi, when starting from cold there's a cloud of white/grey smoke from the exhaust, also when reving the engine after a period of idling there is a cloud the same colour, the longer the idle period the bigger the cloud. Also the fuel economy is poor, I'm only getting 30-35 MPG.

The Ford dealer has inspected the injectors, changed the leak off pipes and injector seals and changed the oil and filter.

I then went to a diesel specialist who pulled off various pipes and breathers and ran the engine with the turbo disconnected and still the plumes of smoke, his comments were possibly petrol in the tank and that the engine was 'breathing heavy'. He wouldn't commit to anything without an expensive engine strip down.

Since then I've done 400 miles and making sure only diesel is going in the tank ruling out the petrol theory, the car uses no oil or water and runs at the correct temperature.

I've read that white/grey smoke is unburnt diesel, this would explain the poor fuel economy, the car has done 78000 miles and has a patchy service history.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks in advance, John M.

If the smoke is unburnt diesel it will have a distinctive 'sweet' smell but I can't see why if the injectors are OK unless the fuel is being inject in at the wrong time - which would be a management issue although I have never heard of it happening. Normally the only other cause of smoke after idling is oil running down the valve guides but that's usually blue.

I agree with peter.n, it doesnt quite add up, iether injectors are faulty or the engine needs a compression test. Its just possible that it has consumed water at some time and bent the rods very slightly ! this will cause a build up of light haze at idle due to incomplete combustion due to low compression.

Fuel consumption should be around 53ish average. Perhaps you need to visit another diesel specialist. Have the injectors been removed and tested ? is the valve timing correct ?

Thanks for your answers, I saw another diesel mechanic today and we've confirmed that the smoke is actually blue and smells of oil, on the further investigation the turbo rotor has play in it and there was a lot of oil in the pipes so we're going to try a new turbo and hope this cures it.

Thanks again, John.

That could do it ...

Strange as you did say in your first post it had been run with the turbo disconnected !

I trust it has the right dip stick in it ? They are prone to snapping on this model and often get replaced with ones from breakers yards! I have seen wrong dip sticks fitted causing excess smoke. best to drain the oil and add measured amount then see what the dip stick reads.I can remeber having a Renault Fuego in for bad smoking and that had the wrong stick and smoething like 2/3 pints of oil too much !
