Volkswagen Golf III - ABS Engine Code, Running SUPER rich. - 86Syncro

Ok, like the title says, I have a '93 Golf III with the 1.8L 90HP "ABS" engine, Single Point Injection. I purchased for next to nothing, so I expected it to have problems.

Anyway, when cold, the car is difficult to start, and does not like to stay running. Once running, it is running so rich that it's pouring smoke out of the tailpipe. Obviously it's missing terribly as well, from the spark plugs being covered in soot from running so rich.

So far I've only replaced the Lambda, to no avail. I'm not new to VW, but I am new to the MKIII, so fuel injection systems (besides Bosch CIS and Digifant II) are new to me.

Could someone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to start troubleshooting? Before I start guessing, and replacing parts that don't need it.

Also, if you know where I can find some informaiton about this injection system (like what it's called), I'd be grateful, since both my wife and I drive Golf IIIs with SPI injection. (Although hers it's the small-block 1.6L 75HP "ABU" engine.)

Thanks in advance.

This model is fitted with the Bosch Mono-motronic single point injection system.A very basic but effective system with no real major faults.Points to check would be coolant temp sensor giving incorrect reading;Flexible flange gasket between injection housing and inlet manifold split. Also check wiring to the lambda sensor where it runs up along o/s chassis leg, this is prone to rotten/corroded cabling. This system does have diagnostic facility, but it will be pre 16 pin obd and will be fitted with the 2 plug ,2 pin system located in the plastic blanks next to hrw switch.hth

Check the coolant temp sensor first.
