Ford Mondeo - Mondeo 2.0 TDDI 2001 Wont Start! - fletch5887

Hi i'm new to this forum so hello and thanks for any help in advanced. Ive got a 2.0 TDDI mondeo that wont start. I cracked of the injector pipes and cranked over Cylinder's 1, 3 & 4 just dribble out but cylinder 2 fires out as you would expect it too. I removed the fuel line into the high pressure pump and cranked it over and fuel rushes out which rules out the lift pump. I suspect the fault lies in the high pressure pump but im unsure if its the mechanical part of the pump or the ecu part of the pump? sureley its mechanicly fine if it supplies good pressure to number 2?. Ive found a company that repaires the control units on these pumps so if thats the problem it would make it alot cheaper for me. Any help would be really appreciated thanks again!!!!!!!!!

Also has anyone removed one of these pumps before, just wondering how bad a job it is?

I unplugged the connector of the high pressure fuel pump and cranked the car over again with the fuel lines loose on top of the injectors and the excact same thing happens. I was under the impression with the connector unplugged it would not inject at all. Anybody got any idea whats happening with this car

If there is fuel reaching the injectors it should run, does it fire on the cylinder with a good ammount of fuel, is it trying to start, is there any smoke from the exhaust when you turn it over?

Every now and then it will have a slight change in cranking noise where cylinder 2 try's to fire. I know theres fuel to the injectors but i think that the pressures so low it wouldn't have the pressure to open the injectors on 1,3 & 4 and inject. If you give it a small sniff of easy start it will fire for a second so the engine is getting air ok and the exhaust system, turbo and cat is proberly ok. I spoke to a ex ford mechanic and he said it might be the fuel metering valve on the pump that is the problem, has anybody else had problems with these? also i'm trying to get a fault code reader, i Have tried a obd2 scanner but it didnt work, Im lead to believe obd2 only work on european cars with diesel engines 2004 onwards. Does anybody know what scanner i need to read the codes of this car? Cheers

The TDDI is not a common rail engine is it, so its got a fairly conventional injection pump, on all the cars I have had these have been ultra reliable but yours is electronically controlled all mine have been purely mechanical - and that makes a difference.

I don't see how a faulty metering valve can cause the pump to deliver different ammounts of fuel to different cylinders, but then I am not familier with these pumps so not really qualified to guide you. I have been running diesels for over 50 years but they have become almost completely different engines in the last 10 years.

I would suggest you consult a diesel specialist, they generally know what they are doing and are usually cheaper than a dealer.

Thanks for the reply Peter, Your right the TDDI isn't a common rail engine, so its a fairly conventional pump but im guessing the pump can be controlled alot by its own control unit, & that is what makes it hard to diagnose, Im not sure exactly how a fuel metering valve works, does anybody?

I totaly agree with you about consulting a diesel specialist but trying to keep the cost down and i'm in no rush to fix this car as ive got another car on the road at the moment, Also its abit of a learning

Why would this pump only pump good pressure to 1 cylinder? even with the pumps ecu disconncted. Does anyone else think its the car, the pump, or the pump ecu???? I'm greatfull of any input thanks again!!!!

That's the bit I can't understand, on the pumps I am familiar with the metering valve controls the input to the distributor section, so any reduction in input should affect the output to all injectors unless this one is different for any reason.

I'm still running '90s diesels, I understand them, although I have just bought a 406 Hdi - and a lexia - just in case.

I checked the injection pump power relay today, to make sure the pump is getting the power and a good earth all found ok, Iv'e bought a pump with a faulty ecu so i'm going to swap the ecu over and fit the other pump, proberly not the best way to go about fixng it but worth ago as i bough the pump for £30.
