I have read lots of posts here about reliability, which set me thinking about all the cars my wife and I have owned in almost 40 years of driving. Maybe I am tempting fate here, but in all that time I have only ever been stranded twice, and only once had to call a tow truck.

Maybe we have been lucky but according to the doom merchants there are some real dogs in my list of cars:

Triumph herald 948

triumph herald 13/60

triumph herald 12/50 swing axle failure - should have fixed it - it had been knocking for ages!

Not all my cars, but some I remember

Vauxhall Viva – reliable but rough as anything

Saab 99 – ok reliability but unbelievable heavy steering. Had the Triumph 1850 engine which had a reputation for poor head gaskets, and sure enough mine went

Vauxhall Firenza – reliable but rough

Saab 99 (another) – worst car I ever owned. Always had something wrong. Hydraulic clutch always losing pressure (despite numerous visits to dealer). I once drove it about 15 miles with no clutch – doing all the stop/start by switching engine off and on and catching the revs . And it had an oil leak which they could never track down

Cavalier Mk1 – Reliable but rough (spot the trend in Vauxhalls) and great handling/performance for its day

Opel Manta (x 2) – Both great cars with never any problem

Vauxhall Astra Mk2 – Reliable but basic

Opel Kadett – No problems

Cavalier Mk2 Sri – Great with no problems, and the first Vauxhall I owned which didn’t seem rough

Toyota Corolla – What you’d expect from a Toyota

Rover 214 – Quality, and never had any head gasket trouble which is supposed to be their weakness

Rover 200 – Ok, but the most uncomfortable seat I’ve ever had

Focus Mk1 – Had it for 6 years and had no complaints

Notice nothing French.

I had a Granada 2.8GL auto, bought for £375 as a short term car. Very comfortable, smooth and easy to drive, but hideously thirsty, and the auto choke took a while to shut off. But it was one of my favourite cars. They don't make them with suspension like that anymore.

I see you've owned a Jag XJ6. As a twenty year old I used to walk past an XJ6 Mk1 for sale most days and I loved the look of that car with it's over riders on the bumper, deep grille and the bank of rocker switches on the dash. But even at that age I could see it was going to bankrupt me if I bought it.

My XJ6 was 9 when I bought it. Apart from a new thermostat and a tendency tor the front electric windows motors to get hot after frequent use..it was quite nice.

I used to tow a large caravan at highly legal speeds and saw 15 mpg on motorways and rather less around town...

You are correct about the rust tho... mine had been resprayed and was in very good bodily condition... I sold it after 6 months - it was a between jobs car and made a small paper profit...I had always wanted one and having had one, I did not want another.. which says it all.

1986 Austin Metro - My first car. Used/ leaked oil, but kept going until I drove it straight through a lamp post and wrote it off.

1986 Pug 309 - Engine and gearbox were tough enough to absorb 15k miles of an 18 year olds abuse. Bought it against the advice of a mate who commented "the only thing that came out of France that worked properly was rabies." How wrong he was.

1984 Datsun Cherry

1987 Nissan Sunny

1986 Daihatsu Charmant

1989 Vauxhall Cavalier - Basic, but easy and cheap to fix.

1995 Rover 414

1993 Vauxhall Astra TD. Didn't keep this long as engine parts were horrendously expensive.

1991 Nissan Primera. I kept this for 3 years and it never missed a beat despite being pressed into service as taxi/tow truck/removal van/ambulance for various things.

1991 Citroen Ax GT. Fun but too small.

1991 Maestro van. Dont laugh. It cost me £150 for it from a mate with 60k on the clock and lots of rust. I bought it at the same time that I bought my house and it saved me a fortune in delivery charges and hiring skips out for renovation waste. It has the dubious honour of being the only vehicle that I have ever had stolen.

1990 Vauxhall Cavalier - bought as an emergency replacement for my stolen and torched van.

1999 Skoda Felicia. Never missed a beat.

2002 Ford Focus. Unbreakable. Routine servicing and replacement tyres only. Went through 4 MOTs without failing.

2010 Kia Rio. Fine so far.

It seems to me that most of the 80's / early 90's cars that I have owned have been pretty sturdy, minor trim and niggly faults that I have been happy to ignore, but when they have needed the attention of a garage parts and labour seemed quite reasonable. As cars get more complex, the potential for a hefty repair bill if something goes wrong increases. Fortunately it hasn't happened to me yet, fingers crossed that Kia's 7 year warrenty lives up to expectations.

MG Metro 1300 no prob

MG Metro Turbo. Original owner had new front pads and discs after 7k. I px'd it after kaking it 'round the clock rpm when I did an overtake. The b********* behind closed up the gap as did my overtakee. Choice was to stop or double pass. Then spark plug disintegrates at 70 ish on motorway.

PX'd at 38k. For some odd reason the new owner had a shedfull of problems with it.

Vectra no2 Complete clutch assembly at 54k. Thankfully a warranty job.

These have been the daily drivers:

1975 Cortina Estate - 1.6 in various shades of white in which I learnt to drive. Ran it for two years, was able to fix anything that went wrong with it, which was not much really - mainly points and condenser, mixture and timing. Never let me down.

1990 Cavalier. A different league to the Cortina, started mis-firing the day I drove it out of the showroom with 4 miles on the clock - cracked spark plug, PFY at the dealer damaged three out of four plug leads in the process of replacing the set meaning VOR for six weeks as there were no HT leads for the (then) new 1.8 engine in the country. Various problems over the 60,000 miles / 5 years I ran it... seized brakes, brakelight switches, dash bulbs. Towards the end it would belch blue smoke on start-up - the breather really needed cleaning out every few thousand miles. Cost a fortune to service as there was always a leaking gasket or pipework to replace, and failed its first two MOTs. Auto-choke never worked properly, dealer could never fix - just got used to left-foot braking until the car warmed up. The choke probably accounting for long term engine wear and all the blue smoke. RAC out five times in five years.

1995 Mondeo. Different league again - very solid car, ran from 5 months old (ex Budget rent-a-car via Ford Direct) and added over 70,000 miles in two years. "High mileage" servicing around 60 quid at my local Ford dealer. Great car, only needed a new starter motor due to a manufacturing fault (but would always start on second attempt so never actually let me down). Sold to a neighbour who covered at least another 50,000 trouble-free miles.

1997 Puma. My commute had dropped to nothing and I fancied a "toy". Ran it for four years around 50,000 miles. Great car, just fed up with the boot getting wet whenever it rained, and the doors freezing shut whenever it was icy. And the tracking going out every 3,000 miles scrubbing the tyres. Never let me down.

2001 C Class. Great car, owned from new, and my lovely Mercedes dealer spent most of the first three years replacing parts! Which was good - because it never went wrong for the next three years once out of warranty! Never came away from a service spending less than 400 quid, often over 800. Cost me three times what I paid for the Mondeo six years previously, and in reality wasn't three times as great as the Mondeo! Never let me down.

2002 FIAT Marea "Weekend". Bought at five years old / 200,000km on the clock, now has over 300k. Needed an alternator a couple of years ago. Err... nothing else. Starts first time, every time. Doesn't burn oil. Can park it anywhere without any worries. Struggling to replace it because it's so damned practical - today it had two big dogs in the back on a vet run, followed by 200kg of logs in the other direction.

Garage I worked in in the 70's changed from Rover Triumph to Opel. Overnight the work just dissapeared as the Opels were so reliable. We only ever had to fit the odd water pump and heater matrix and the odd singing diff in a Manta or Ascona so different to Triump staggs and Dolomites & Heralds etc.

Few troublesome carbs on early commodores but senators & Monza's were fab in their day and the Opel GT, great looker.

Interesting to see the above posts and how much more reliable the older cars were really for their time. Too much electrics now.

Cars in chronological order and whether good bad or indifferent.

1976 P reg Hillman Imp - no mechanical faults but eventually rotten floor got to bad - learned to drive in this.
1980 W reg Lada 1300 - great car, no problems, new timing chain, converted to grp n rally spec and cut my teeth to get to clubmans A licence, finally piston rings blew after adding 80,000 odd miles.
1980 V reg Ford Cortina 1300L Mk V - terrible car, totally under powered, VV carbs meant rac was out to it more than to any othr car I've ever had. Finally written off after a blow out on a tyre passed as in excellent condition by k@@@fit 2 days earlier.
1983 Y reg MG Metro 1300 - good little car, reliable once the thermostat problem had been resolved as previous owner had bypassed it as a bodge job when it had failed.
1986 C reg Peugeot 305GT - excellent car, very reliable, only real problem was a failed brake servo. Added over 140000 miles in my profession as freelance motorsport photographer and motoring journalist.
1986 D reg Saab 9000i - fantastic reliable car, great for my high milage needs in my trade as with the 305GT. Covered 190000 miles in 3 1/2 years with only regular servicing and only car I've ever had to replace a clutch in. Not too heavy on fuel but extremely comfortable on long tiresome journeys.
1988 F reg Saab 9000SE turbo auto - great car, needed new turbo as Indy Saab specialist I bought it from and myself had been conned as it had receipts for a new turbo 9,000 miles previously from a dealer in Essex. On checking when turbo blew the dealer had never seen the car and the receipts supposedly been stolen by an ex employee. Very very heavy on fuel, 10 - 15 mpg but it had been tuned and modded by Abbott Racing.
1995 N reg Mondeo 1.8td lx Mk1 - nice enough car, patchy reliability needed timing belt, alternator, water pump, various other small items in 2 to 3 years of owning and low milage ( had given the business up by now ).
1998 S reg Mondeo 1.8td lx saloon Mk2 - same as above plus jinxed as it had 4 new rear bumpers as people kept hitting the back end ( their fault as proven by insurance claims and police ).
2000 X reg Focus 1.8td cl Mk1 - nice car to drive, useless in ice and snow, needed complete bottom end rebuild after 70,000 miles
2003 03 reg Focus 1.8tdci Mk1 - nice car but again bottom end rebuild needed after 73,000 miles. Started to get disillutioned with the blue oval brand.
2004 04 reg Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9td equippe - absolutely fantastic, best car I've ever owned, no problems at all, great dealer for accesories and servicing.
2003 53 reg Cmax 2.0tdci 140 zetec - quick car, very very heavy on diesel, under 30 mpg on a steady 70mph motorway run. Had problems with starting when warm occasionally. Finally lost all faith in the blue oval and would never ever have another Ford.
2005 55 reg VW Passat 2.0TD SE 140 Mk V - another fantastic car, no problems whatsoever, excellent mpg 50+ on urban cycle and 60 to 65 mpg on a steady motorway run.
2009 59 reg brand new Citroen Berlingo Multispace XTR 90 diesel - don't even mention this, have listed the many many complaints with this and Citroën dealers and Citroën uk in other posts. Totally unreliable, worst car I've ever had the misfortune to own/drive. Will never ever ever have another Citroën.
2010 10 reg Renault Grand Scenic Tomtom 106 Tdci - fantastic up to now, great space, comfort and reliability, starts first time even after standing 3 weeks during the dec snow.
1997 T reg Nissan Terrano 2.7 Td Xtreme - bought late 2009 to get into off roading with a local 4x4 club. Great car to cut my off roading teeth but got bitten by the Land Rover bug and wanted to do more off road than the car was capable of so traded it for a 1996 P reg Discovery 300tdi lady august and the disco is fantastic. Very reliable, spacious, great to drive, heavily off road modified with more to come and hopefully be with me for years to come.

Hope you've enjoyed my brief description of my cars in 27 years of driving. There have been others but they have been fully prepared saloon race cars, rally cars and rallycross cars which I have either owned or been paid to race - I'm also an ex racing and rally driver.
