VW Polo Bluemotion - Polo diesel particulatefilter (DPF) trouble - rexmedorum
Hi all
I posted a while back as I was worried about my VW Polo Bluemotion if I were to move closer to my work and stop doing 100 mile round-trip commutes. I am now soon moving even closer than expected. Basiclaly I won't be using the car much and it would be mainly short trips.

When I first had the car I had problems with teh dpf light coming on. The 100 mile round-trip commutes sorted that completely.

But now I'm wondering if there is anything I can do when I move again?
Or would the best optionbe to try & sell the car and get a non-dpf (probably petrol) one?

I should also mention it's an 09. If I did have to sell it how would I get the most for it (not keen on part-exing on a more expensive one)

As long as you can do a longer journey ( over 10 miles ) once every 100 miles or so you should be ok.

Alternatively you will have to take a detour to regenerate the DPF every now & then.

That will be cheaper than swopping the car, with the dealer wanting a good slice from the deal.

That's what I thought!

Every 100 miles a 1m mile journy sounds ok, so we'll just give it a go.

If it gives problems, would it be an option to have it removed? I have seem copnaies offering this but not sure hwat he mechenical / insurance / warranty / legal implications are?

Don't have the DPF removed ,it is there for a reason to reduce cancer small soot particles sticking to your longs no good for children and their future.

I have a DPF focus 1.6 and do mainly short runs.Do what the OP said and it should be ok.

I have a Polo bluemotion and do short journeys. As has been said just do the odd longer journey.

If the light comes on 'run the thing at 2500 rpm or so 'till it goes out' was what the dealer told me

When regenerating the DPF it just produces one big cloud of soot and junk instead of a smaller constant cloud, if your worried about children's lungs - walk - whatever you do don't go by bus or buy a diesel of any description.

It doesn't -- DPF regeneration is the same as a charcoal fire, the soot burns to produce carbon dioxide and water.

The tiny amount of non-flammable residue remains trapped in the DPF matrix, but takes up far less room than the soot particles so doesn't affect engine operation.
