Hyundai i20 comfort automatic - Forced sale - doctork

My father in law has had to give up driving due to medical opinion and therefore is forced to sell his Hyundai i20 hatchback (1.4 comfort -petrol -automatic). The selling dealer has bid just less than £5800 for it. It is a 10 reg and just over 8 months old with about 4000 miles on the clock. Bearing in mind that similar aged vehicles are retailing for around £10,000 (approved Hyundai cars) this seems to be a bit low. Or is it a realistic bid??

Being charitable the dealer doesn't want the stock and has therefore bid low. Alternatively he is seeking to take advantage of an elderly man wanting to offload a nearly new car. I am thinking of advising him to go down the auction "sure sell " route and take his chances there.

Any advice welcome.

They are taking the proverbial - try a few more dealers before a 'fire sale' option.

A similar thing happened to my grandfather-it's quite common. In a final bid to stave off the inevitable, they buy an automatic and find the clutch wasn't the problem. The indignity of losing their driving licence is compounded by a heavy fiscal loss.

Auctions are not known for selling cars at top dollar prices...

The price is a bit low. If you live close to your father, you could try to sell it on his behalf privately. I would ask £8000, and accept anything over £7,500. You can't charge dealership prices-be realistic and get the painful process over asap. This is what we did for my grandfather. However, the only interested buyer was a dealer! I think you might fare better with the Hyundai.

Good news.

The car went under the hammer at BCA (reserve of 7000) and realised £8300 -so after charges he will be £2100 better off than the paltry dealer offer.

HJ's advice was invaluable in this respect.
