Volkswagen Passat - Brake Leak - Caliper Cable Attachment Seal - crossfieldballs

Hi all,

My 2001 Passat (B5)'s rear brake is leaking :( It seems to be coming from the seal between the caliper's cylinder and the parking brake mechanism attached to it, the bit that gets rotated when the cable is pulled. It's a sort of spring-loaded tap thing, mounted by a screw...(which doesn't seem to budge...) When the cable is pulled, the thing rotates but brake fluid drips down from the cyclinder. Hard to see exactly because it's behind the caliper. The Haynes manual doesn't elaborate on it (which seems a bit of a swiz)...does anyone know anything about it, please? HJ mentions rear brake seals going in the 'What's Bad' for this model, is it the same thing? ...can't seem to find any posts about it.... Grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Terry

Yes they can and do fail at that seal but ensure the fluid is not leaking from the Banjo coupling where the flexi bolts to the calliper. You may be able to a service kit but they are getting rarer as the price of replacement rebuilt calipers are available. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter I will check the banjo coupling - do you mean a whole new caliper may be as cheap as a repair kit? thanks
