ford focus tdci 2004 - Used car paint peeling after 3 weeks. - duarab

Bought a 2004 ford foucus about 3/4 weeks ago from local garage, looked to be in great condition with no rust, anyway went to wash it today on and noticed loads of rust on back cills and around front cills, on closer inspection i notice that the paint is peeling and coming off, obviously they have sprayed straight over the rust to hide this, is there anything i can do? The rust is really bad.

thanks mark

Take it back and ask for your money back.

Hi, thanks, i think im going to go and see them, i dont know what to do if they refuse, you can clearly see now that the whole bottom of the cill has been sprayed and quite high up the back cill round the door, i did notice this was a rougher paint at the time but i though it was a factory finish on this car as some have different paint aroud the cills, it looked really good, its really bad rust know and the paint is all flaking off, some of the finish has now turned white. Is this normal for a dealership to try to do this?

Also agree ask for a refund and go somewhere else.If they refuse report them to trading standards.Always wise to have a second hand car checked before buying AA RAC.

If you owe any money on the car stop paying play up hell its your money.

If you paid retail price hopefully they'll get it refinished for you. You can't expect perfection (it is a 7 year old car) but they should be able to get it redone.

I'm not sure Trading Standards would be remotely interested - it is a cosmetic issue and they best they'll say is "write a letter". It is a civil matter between you and the dealer, ts would only be interested if the car is dangerous or clocked.

Maybe they are not interested trading standards and the car is getting on.In my opinion the op is sold a pup by the dealer he has got the car for three weeks.By the looks of it they have done a bodged respray try to get your money back and walk.

The reason for my comment on TS is that some people here seem to have a bizarre idea of what they are and what they do like they are some sort of knight in shining armour who will solve any problem with a car.

They can't and won't. Firstly, used cars are a long way down their list of things they do and in most departments all they are really doing at the moment is wondering which of them is about to be made redundant. They are normally very under staffed.

However, the most important thing is what they can do. They can only do anything if an offence has been committed. That basically means selling a dangerous, clocked or otherwise illegal car. Im such circumstances they can do and take action.

In the case of a dispute between buyer and seller that is a civil matter between the two. TS will sometimes advise but they are wary to do so because they do not want liability on losing a case (i.e. TS say - go on sue, you have a good case, customer sues, loses, ends up with £30000 legal bill and then sues TS for giving wrong advice....). Their usual response is to outline the procedure for making a complaint but it usually amounts to "write a letter".

When it comes down to it, should it get legal, the customer is on their own and it is down to them to do the work, take the risk of losing and pay the costs. TS will do little or nothing as it is a matter between two independent parties.
