Old codger's car - bintang

Can anyone recommend one please? It should have easy access, good headroom and be easy to operate. It is for local morotring and can be manual or automatic. HJ used to favour the Toyota Yaris but he gives a good report of the Chevrolet Spark in today's print column and this may also suit..

For easy access, good headroom and ease of driving, go for the Honda Jazz every time. But the Yaris is a very good car too.

I don;tr know anything about the Spark but Hondas and Toyotas are likely to be more reliable.

As regards Chevrolet reliability, bought a new Matiz for my wife 3 years ago. 20,000 miles later it has never faltered, and the only thing I have had to ask for at a service was to adjust the handbrake as the travel seemed a little excessive.

I was so impressed I bought a used Kalos, with 30,000 on which has done 9000 miles in the past 6 months also without any problems. Hasn't even used any oil.

You ought to buy a Rover 75. They are very suitable for old codgers, they are badged 75 because they are for people over 75 old.

The Rover 90 was for people over 90, but you don't see many these days.

A Volvo could be OK for oldies, my dad always reckoned they were old people's cars..

Glad to be of help!

quizman-I think you would benefit from a big bore exhaust. Might help you with some answers.

re: the chevrolet. All my experience with GM produced stuff has been very positive-especially regarding durability. No, you never dreamed of owning a Vauxhall, but you can get a second hand one for buttons and it'll give far better reliability than a 'bulletproof' old VW or Merc.

Is that why they stopped making the Morris 1000, there was no one old enough to buy them?

I would be weary of the Kalos seen a few with siezed cams and you cannot get recon heads its a £1500 engine change,

How about a Fiat Panda? Small, cheap, economical, reliable, pretty easy to access in the front IMO, very good head room, and very easy to drive. It also has 5 doors, and a pretty good boot for a small car. You would probably want to avoid a recent diesel because the DPF is likely to cause problems with short trips. The 1.1 or 1.2's should be fine though.

I'm an old codger

My wife is an old codgeress.

I drive a Yaris. She drives a Matiz.

Ease of entry/exit .. comfort and low running costs plus ease of parking are all.

Fiat? Read the forums full of lists of things that go wrong when they are older and the lack of quality shows...

As for Rover 75s, you don't need to be an old codger to own one: just slightly dumb. Far too big around town, expensive to run and looks like a rather tired old bus... :-)

Very cheap, comfy cruiser though. BMW sourced diesel engine...

...there's more to cheap motoring than mpg and £35 tax disks. The cheapest deals are always to be found in unpopular cars. Around town, it would be a pain, but for someone, it might make a good car.
