ford escort 1.6 si 1996 - White smoke out of exhaust - golf3driver

Hi all, Hope you can help me on this one chaps..... I bought this escort with a suspected water pump and thermostat gone, i changed water pump, cam belt, drive belt as it was cracked, still did not start and it was blowing the water out of reservoir, so i changed the head gasket, run a flat edge along head and it was straight, put it all back together and gave it an oil change, it started but lots of white smoke comin out of exhaust, took it for a run after running it half hour and it was blowing white smoke out, checked dipstick and its clean oil, checked coolant and it does not seem to be going down, when you start it it takes a little while to start probably 4 -5th turn and only blows a little bit of smoke until you rev it then it blows out smoke, any help with this would be fantastic thanks

Ouch! That's a lot of work on an old car-and it still isn't working properly. You'd need a lot of unburned petrol to make white smoke and you know what you're doing so I won't suggest that! If it's not fuel, it's water, so where is it coming from? Have you noticed the temperature gauge fluctuating-especially during/after suddenly opening the throttle? If so, the cylinder head itself might be cracked. :(

I had an old Toyota that suffered that fate. Changed the head gasket-knew the job was done properly but I kept finding oil in the coolant. Very annoying after all that work. Over a shortish test drive you won't notice a change in coolant levels-a little volume of water makes a lot of wet steam.

There is a bit of water dripping out of the exhaust, i will check temp guage tommorrow and see if it fluctuates
