Ford Escort van N reg 1800 diesel - sluggish/bad fuel consumption - phil13167

Hi all

My escort van has started playing me up for the last 3 months. It started getting sluggish so i put a can of injector cleaner in what a mistake that was it vertualy killed it ,coughing, spluttering, wouldnt start , smoking like a bonfire , after being towed home the rac had a look he bypassed the fuel filter and all was ok for an hour then it went back to all the mentioned problems. So then my local garage had it in all the injectors were blocked so they were all sorted all new filters and pipes £250 later all was ok for about a week. Then it has since gone sluggish again 70 flat out on the flat 50-60 up hills . It just seems to me that something is just not fireing correct like in a petrol engine that is miss firing .Also my biggest concern is the drop in fuel consumption i used to get 475-540 to a tank now it is down to 360-380 . I have spoke to my local garage and the reply was it must be the fuel pump very expensive to sort out . Can a fuel pump make this happen i think it is something very simple that has been overlooked but i know nothing about engines so im useless. Could someone shed any light on this or is the end of the life for the van coming.

Thanks phil

What speed are you looking for from your 15 year-old van on the flat??? :(

Injector cleaner will not help in a contaminated fuel system!15 years of tank condensation and often previous owners using old cans to top up between service-station fill-ups and fuel filters left unchanged, along with fuel tanks run low, will have put water/muck through the pump.Lost count of how many old diesel tanks I removed when in the trade to clean out.

Have you removed the banjo bolt/union from the main feed into the inj pump to see if any muck is sitting in the pump entrance?Probably not the best filter housing set-up around on those vehicles but fuel must be filtered.Remove the filter and check for contamination. If there`s muck in the tank it`ll clog new filters up again in no time.
