Peugeot 106 - 1997 Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel Suspected Air Leak - Chris106

Hi All,

I'm after some advice on the poor starting on my Pug 106 1.5 Diesel. The car has 163,000 miles on it (nicely run in!!) and it has recently developed a cold start issue. When it has been stood overnight it will turn over firing on 1 cylinder and one by one the other 3 will follow suit.

I've checked the usual, All 4 glow plugs are working (I've had them out and tested them with 12volts) and they all recieve 12 volts from the timer prior to starting. Also the cold start advance lever on the Pump is hard over to the right in the cold start position.

This afternoon I decided to prime the fuel pump with the priming ball, and it fired straight away on 4 cylinders despite being cold. So I suspect an air leak, does anyone know if there's a common failure point on this engine? i'm thinking along the lines of Injector Leak-off pipes but apart from that i'm a bit stuck.

I'm changing the cambelt tomorrow (its due one soon anyway) and will make sure the injection timing is spot on but as the car runs so well and is so efficient I'm inclined to think this is ok.

Any help offered will be greatly accepted!

Thanks in anticipation

Chris

Could well be a fuel delivery issue with a leak in the system the old trick is to cover the joints on the feed pipe in turn with grease 'till you hit the one that does the job then fix that

Yes you have an air leak in the fuel line somewhere, very difficult to find, it may even be a perished priming bulb. The inner layer of the rubber pipes can perish where they are clamped and hair line cracks let the air in. Also the plastic housing for the fuel filter hay be distorted and leaking. Regards Peter

It will almost certainly be an air leak in the "S" shaped fuel pipe which runs from the priming bulb to the filter on the cylinder head. The connection at the head will be loose as the pipe will be hard and brittle. Engine movement does the rest. Replace with a good quality length of fuel hose.

There is no plastic fuel filter housing on the TUD5 engine - this came later. These engines have a proper spin-on fuel filter mounted on an extension of the head casting. An excellent scheme - the engine heat minimises the risk of fuel waxing.

Cheers 659, I'll start my search there! Was sort of hoping you were still posting on here, I've read all your posts regarding the vernier pullys on the pump and camshaft!
I was going to do the cam belt yesterday but I've come down with a bad cold, wife had it a few days ago, so didn't really fancy spending a couple of hours outside fiddling! I'm off work until Wednesday so I'll get it done before then!
But a bit of luck came my way today, my mate ordered the wrong glow-plugs for his C15 van (DW8 engine) and they are the right ones for my 106 so he's donated them to me!
Will keep you posted on what I find!

My 106 1.5d 1999 has same starting symtoms/problems.. After mucking about I discovered problem was air in the fuel system. On my motor I discovered a 2" length of clear fuel line just after the fuel housing. After cleaning the muck off I noticed air bubbles. And just before the prime hand pump, another good length of clear fuel line with again, bubbles. In my case, problem may sit at the connection on the tank pick up (fingers crossed). But its handy to know if you can have a visual on the fuel line. I also have the immobiliser pickup issue but havn't got round to replacing it. Have had car for 10 yesrs with immobilser problem for 9!
