passat 2.0 2003 - crankcase vent pipe - STEBRO

Hi, I have purchased a 2.0 passat and i have covered 500 miles in it. Over the last few days the engine noise has got louder, yesterday i was driving home when the low oil warning light came on,on pulling the dipstick it showed only a small amount which i topped up to the correct level. After topping up i took the plastic cover which sits over the coil packs and found that someone had severed the crankcase pipe at the point where it joins the engine and where it joins the air pipe, at this point they had wrapped insulating tape over the opening.Could any one tell me why they would have done this and would it be the reason why it has used all of the oil , i should also say that the car had a oil change before it was handed over to me.

Regards Steve.

Engine code required form the ID label in the service book or the ID label in the spare wheel bay. Regards Peter

I would suspect a blocked breather pipe/valve and the increased pressure was causing the engine to burn oil and may have interfered with the Turbo oil return efficiency. The taped up pipe is a bodge. How many miles has the car done. Regards Peter

Hi Peter, It has done 56000.

Is the breather pipe under pressure. A quick check suggests your car does not have a turbo. I await the engine code. What was taped up the feed to the air intake or the outlet from the cam cover. Regards Peter

Was this a private purchase, off ebay, or a dealer purchase. Do you relly think the where on the steering wheel and the gearstick and the MOT's supoort a claim of only 56,000 miles. Regards Peter

Hi Peter, There is not a lot of wear on the steering wheel or gearstick. The car came with al history and m.o.ts.I am not sure how to check the pressure. The car was purchased from a dealer, as for engine code, does sg5 mean anything. The tape was at the intake side.

The ID label has two larger 3 alpha/digit numbers one is the gearbox and one the engine I suspect yours may be ALT. The tape was at the intake side does not beam anything, was the cam cover taped off of the vent pipe. Contact the dealer and inform them that there is something wrong. Has the engine shut up since you filled the oil up. Regards Peter

Hello Peter, Yes it does say ALT, the cam end is open, i have not noticed a lot of difference in engine noise.

if you cover the cam end with a small plastic bag does it try and inflate the bag with the engine running/reving. I think you are going to need to take this car back either for refund or repair. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter, if it inflates does that mean bad news.
