Hi All. Due to collect a new 1.6l auto soon - what advice do you suggest for running this in (esp. given that we won't have much control over gear changes etc.)?

With thanks in advance.

Thanks Dutchie.

Any others have experience in this area? If it helps, it's the same engine and autobox fitted to the petrol i30. Thanks again.

I've seen advice that you should use full throttle acceleration and full deceleration several times in the first twenty miles to bed-in the rings, although it makes sense to let it reach full operating temperature first.

The consensus seems that cars treated delicately when new become oil burners.

I also read a article to change the oil and filter after this low mileage Bathtub, to get writ of the swarf.Maybe some comments from Injection Doc or Workshop Tech what their experience is regarding running in.

If an early oil change was required manufacturers would recommend it.

To my knowledge only Subaru still want a 1000 mile oil/filter change.

Citroen did require a 1000 mile "check up" for our old C2 but this did not include an oil change.

Drive it how it should be driven from the start - I've not heard of recent engines failing due to abuse but plenty of low mileage oil-chompers that have been treated with kid gloves from the off.

And never race any cold engine whether new or 10 yrs old!

As long as the engine is warmed up, drive it like you stole it - there's no need to run in modern cars.

Why would manufactures recommend a early oil change? Some recommended 20000 miles oil changes some do not we could discuss this forever.

No they wouldn't, it adds to maintenance costs over the first three years and upsets the all-important fleet market. As long as not doing so doesn't cause the things to fail in unacceptable numbers within the 10-year period prior to their planned obsolescence, they don't give a monkey's.

Hence the "thrash it to bed the rings" comment elsewhere here. This wouldn't be necessary if a sensible grade of oil were used for the running-in period and swapped for a long-life type at about 1000 miles.

To the best of my knowledge, neither have I met TeeCee, nor do I know them, but I like what they say.

Let's hope we never have to discuss cat food!
