Audi A3 - 2001 Audi A3 1.6 MISFIRE! - Prince23

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question for anyone with information about Audis. Ive got a 2001 A3 1.6 sport which has a terrible misfire once the engine starts getting warm/up to temperature. It doesnt happen when the engine is cold.

Its has been on the diagnostics several times, so far ive changed the air flow meter, spark plugs, plug leads and coil pack and the problem still persists.

I took it to an Audi specialist and he, like everyone else isn't entirely sure whats causing the misfire, however he seems fairly confident its the inlet and lower manfiold at a cost of £1000 to repair??

Any ideas if this sounds like a possibility or is there another common fault which hasnt been picked up?

(aldo does anybody know if the new after market starter motors guarantee not to squeal the b***** ive got on it now?

A good diag tech should be able to trace the misfire without chucking loads of parts on it ! A smoke test, ( known as leak test) is worth carrying out, this will trace any air leaks in the manifold system. There is a rubber breather pipe low down that rots and causes missfire & rough running problems & is hidden near rear of head. A smoke leak test will find this fault in couple of mins. Good diag garages use these units.

I trust the engine is running on the correct grade of oil ? if the oil grade is wrong or has a poor quality oil filter the oil pressure can run too high causing the tappets to jack up causing misfire! I have come across this many a time where they have been topped up with the wrong oil!, but check for airl leaks first & an emmissions check with someone who understands the readings will know whats wrong.

Thanks for the reply,

I always use edge 5-30 oil which i believe is the correct one. Ive spoken to a few garages today and none of them seem to know any techniques for checking a damaged manifold!!.

I think im going to blast it with wd40 see if its sucking it in anywhere

Don't use WD40, any silicon based product can have a detrimental effect on the operation of the HEGO sensor's ( oxygen sensor) as its a contaminant.

Find a garage that has a "leak tester/smoke -pro" these will sucesfully test manifolds and injectors seals etc & breather pipes for leaks very efficently.

I have used leak detectors for some years & how garages can operate without I really don't understand as they save hours of time and shed loads of money in parts!

Hi

Ive had the same sort of problem on my 1999 1.6 sport, when cold it seems to sit and pur nicely, then as soon as its clocked a few miles, it seems to have a rough idle, reving itsself???! also when accelerating i notice it seems to be really flat, then unfortunately it decided to start using oil :( i took my car to dialynx performance in swindon, those guys are wizards! my engine breather pipe , which works on a valve, was split and blocked, which made my car choke when warm (when it needed more air) and therefor started swallowing oil!, i spent £100 for this small part to be changed, and honestly havent had a problem since ! touch wood ...

dont pay money for parts it could be! spend the money on a decent mechanic (dialynx) and know your car will be sound, theres too many mechanics that like to assume whats wrong, but make sure your paying for a thorough check.
