02 307 2.0 hdi 110 - Smoke on cold start and lumpy running - Dickie1976

I have just replaced the turbo on my 307 at a huge expense. Its hard to say if it did this before or not due to the turbo fault, it starts fine but smokes a bit and runs lumpy for the first 30 seconds or so. It clears and is then fine except for what can only be described as a tappety noise which comes and goes but is noticable more when you slow down and use engine braking. It pulls well and there is no excessive smoke under acceleration, just this noise and the smoke on initial start up. Any help would be appreciated as im slowley losing the will to live. Has just been serviced too. Thanks

What colour is the smoke?
Blue smoke tends to indicate burned oil, indicative of worn rings on a diesel engine (fingers crossed it's not that!)
Grey/white smoke is unburned fuel suggesting a partial misfire in one of the cylinders.
Black smoke is incompletely burned fuel, resulting from excessive EGR, retarded injection timing, or weak injection pressure. The fact that the car runs fine under load rules out simple intake/exhaust restrictions I'm afraid. Did you find out why the turbo failed? This problem could well be related to that-especially if the fuelling has bean 'tweaked'.

The smoke is white/grey and disapears with the misfire. The shaft bearing went on the old turbo, it was noisy and produced no boost, it had loads of end float and up and down movement. Now it runs as it did before. I have changed the fuel filter and put some forte through it but it has made no difference. Someone suggested that i change the glow plugs as this maybe causing the misfire on cold start. Yesterday the ticking noise got really loud at one point the disapeared completely about ten minutes later. Now its back again. maybe its one of the injectors?? My 306 2.0hdi ran much smoother and quieter than the 307.

As the previous turbo went, it may have flooded the intercooler and pipes with oil.. which is giving the problem.

You DID clean the intercooler and pipes?

The garage did clean out all the pipe work, or at least they charged me for it! They said as the old turbo was not allowing oil through there was no need to change the intercooler.

So you get white/grey smoke accompanied by a ticking noise, and what sounds like a misfire and no smoke? That would point to a 'sticking' injector. Knocking sounds in diesels are often related to hard combustion (say due to injector 'sticking open'), and the misfire is a failure to inject at all.

Right, glow plugs have been replaced which seems to have cured the smokey starting and lumpy running on initial start. The ticking, tappety noise is still there but comes and goes but at times can be quite bad. Noisy more often than not. Its really starting to aggrivate me tbh. I dont know if i should buy new injectors or what to do.
