If when you switch on the ignition the engine management lamp is flashing it means the transponder chip inside the key is not being read. The engine will not start in this condition. The chip could've become corrupted, but the most likely cause is that you dropped your key somewhere and it split open. The chip will have then fallen out. Do you remember this happening? The chip is small and dark grey in colour. You need to re-trace your movements and find it, refit it inside the key and the engine will then start.

If you have a spare key, you could try using that; at least it would prove whether or not the problem is due to the transponder.

hi thanks for the reply but have checked key and under the cowling round steering wheel and cant find a transponder unit either i checked the older posts on here to some people have said they do have transponders others dont i have checked my key and car and cant find either like i said i have fuel at the inlet to the carb/single point injection so ive been told thats what its and i also have fuel at the return outlet on the carb /single point injection but what im wondering as the plugs and inside of the carb/s/p/i seem to always be dry. could of one of the three electrial components fitted to my carb/s/p/i which all seem to control somthing have failed thus cutting off fuel and making maagemnt light flash thanks

Well you have me stumped there. The engine management lamp on all Vauxhalls flashes when the transponder signal is not being received, but I've no idea why else it would flash. Certainly 1996 models were fitted with a transponder system, unless yours is one that slipped the net or it's actually an older car on a newer plate.

The next thing to check is to make sure you have an HT spark at the plug when cranking. Also the fuel injector should operate when you crank the engine, and fuel should be seen spraying from it. If you have neither then unplug and reconnect the crankshaft sensor and try again.

Sorry to hear that there's been no progress; just out of interest, did you try the spare key?

hi thanks for the reply you hit the nail on its head it runs if you pour petrol down carb/s/p/i but the injector doesnt spray fuel i will try unplugging crankshaft sensor in the morning should this cure the problem ? if not anything else u could think of would be great help thanks again

If it runs when petrol is poured into the spi unit, then either the single point injector is faulty, the wiring to it,or the main control unit. There is no crank sensor on these if it has a rotating ditributor. The ignition point is set from this.I would suggest you disconnect the link lead from the fuel injection housing to the single point injector and clean and tighten the contacts.hth
