Car wouldn't start, thought it was flat battery, (was turning over with dificulty) but my taxi driving neighbour said frozen diesel! When it thawed (monday), started it and then took it for a good drive, and SHE who must be obeyed to the sales, where they just happened to have a Poundstretcher and they had battery booster packs for £25, ( halfords £50) Suddenly remembered Short runs = battery drain. So just in case as need to be mobile for getting to work.

Happy motoring

We're in Gloucestershire just - in a valley off the Wye Valley - but the tractors and quads had frozen diesel every day until yesterday. We had -16 at night and never got above -12 in the day for three days. Most winter diesel will freeze at -10 in the UK.

Never had frozen diesel in 19 years of driving them - down to -19C.

I suspect a lot of problems caused by old red diesel - not winter spec but left in farmer's tanks - or water in fuel filter or tanks.

How many diesel drivers get their garage to drain the fuel filter water (assuming they don't do it themself)?. As fuel filters last for 40k + miles, easy for water to build up in filter bottom..

(Rather like changing pollen flters, water drainage from filters is ignored)

Entirely agree with you with reference to cars and commercials.

The vehicles I referred to run on red which is apparently more prone to wax.

Derv can stand lower temperatures.

Most modern diesels have fuel line heaters fitted;both Bosch and CAV/Rotodiesel sell heater kits for fitting to earlier vehicles and they are not make specific-either can be fitted to any type of diesel injection equipment.Cold diesel wouldn't stop it cranking.

Reports of -24 in Germany no reports of diesel freezing.I very much doubt if frozen fuel was the reason for the nonstart.

It's not unheard of. In Wigton temperatures dropped to minus 15 last week, causing diesel to freeze in a Ford Transit. I have heard of it freezing in lorries at this temperature before.

Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI. We have had temperatures here in the East riding of Yorkshire -20c and no diesel freezing.I use the BP ultimate diesel.Maybe quality of diesel and has being said before red diesel.

Why o Why do we get the "use of red Diesel" (car runs on Shell V power when I'm at a shell garage, otherwise supermarket fuel which is high volume, and I don't think that they are adding water like they do to the frozen meat! The header says it is a car. my neighbour(the tacsi driver) parks his car next to mine. it's on an exposed hillside and I'm sure windchill will have something to do with it too. Car started normally when it thawed. Yes, the fuel filter will be changed at the next sevrice, very shortly. As a matter of fact we used to get lower than -20 in the Jura mountains in switzerland. My brother in law was in the swiss army dog patrol, and he used to sleep with the dog in his sleeping bag on excercises. But happy motoring all.

By the way the car care booster pack is exactly the same as Halfords at half the price, went and physically checked.

"Why o Why do we get the "use of red Diesel" "

Because the second post referred to tractors = which use red diesel...

Windchill - No No No. If it's minus x outside, it will be minus x whether the air is still, or a 70 mph wind is blowing. It makes no difference to a car.

As for why some diesel has frozen and others not, could it be that the oil companies use more antifreeze as the temp drops. The fuel that has frozen could have been supplied before the low tempratures arrived?

Chevrolet Epica Rural Wales - Frozen diesel - jc2

Put the clutch down while cranking-no gearbox drag.

Chevrolet Epica Rural Wales - Frozen diesel - jc2

Not on this one-if it's an auto.

Agreed in part in that the min temp will only fall to minus x regardless, but the 'rate of cooling' will be quicker in moving air. So even a car will cool off quicker.

The golf 1 diesel had a metal tank with a filter in the bottom.low temp diesel flock and water from condensation in the tank caused frozen fuel lines. The golf 2 had a plastic tank and filter end of problem
