Certainly not foolproof as I found out In the recent -20 temps. My auto brake would not release the brake as the pads were frozen to the discs. It took a lot of rapid forward and reversing to get them free. In past cars with a regular handbrake, I would always park in first gear in very low temps, or if I knew I was not going to use the car for some time with the handbrake off, to prevent it seizing on. Can't do that with an auto handbrake it seems. I say "it seems"- as I tried using the emergency handbrake release and leaving it in gear, but that set off an alarm. It stops as soon as you press the card button to lock the car.
Despite the brake functioning as before when you use the car next time, the alarm beeps on start up and warning lights flashed up in the dash showing parking brake problem. Using the brake that way seems to upset the computer. Everything resets itself after a short drive and the warning lights go out eventually.
I'm sure there must be some way to park the car without having the auto brake come on though?
