Renault Clio 2001 1.2 Dynamique - Can't start engine... immobiliser problem? - chaptereleven

Ok, 3 problems occurred around the same time yesterday, all leading to me not being able to start the engine: (possibly all unrelated!)

1) After turning the hazard warning lights on, I couldn't turn them off. Had to remove fuse to get them to shut up.

2) Light snow

3) Usual minor roof leak near the sun shades... never bothered me before.

Now it won't start. All warning lights are as normal. Car unlocks/locks ok with key fob.

Fuel pump sounds ok.

When you turn the ignition, it makes a repeating pattern of noises. Starter motor turns a few times and then there's a BUZZ sound. Repeat.

Any ideas? I've tried the spare key - no difference.

Sounds like you have problem battery, the water leak would bother me the water couldbe running down onto all the under the dashboard and could cause no end of trouble including the one you have.

Thanks. Hmm i'll test the battery tonight. The roof leak has only ever been a small inch wide patch between the sunroof and sunvisor.

It only wants one drop of water in the wrong place to ruin the electrics in a car.

Have you replaced the fuse you removed?

Yes I replaced the fuse. Hazard lights seem to be working now.

I've taken the battery out, and it measures 12.5 volts.
Charged it for a few hours anyway.

But it didn't make a difference.... I suppose it could still be the battery though.

One thing I did notice. When I first turn the ignition, all the lights go out EXCEPT for the Electrical Fault/Glow plugs light - which I assume is supposed to go out after a few seconds? Not sure on a non-diesel though.

Try measuring the battery voltage while operating the starter. Any thing less than about 10Volts and the battery need replacing or chgarging
