Put down deposit unseen on 9 month old Mondeo with 14k miles through Ford Direct. On inspection at the dealers clear that all tyres had just been changed with white sealant residue evident. On rear were new budget tyres of chinese origin. Front had very worn budget tyres, clearly not factory spec. Dealer claimed tyres must be ok because car had RAC inspection certificate and that legal because had three quarters tread! Ford customer service just reiterated the dealers position.

Very unimpressed and won`t be buying a Ford Direct car again.

Sorry to hear that Carlisle - it interested me because I recently bought a 7 month old Mondeo, but via Motorpoint, Derby eventually - and top marks to them.

I'd previously tried some Ford dealers & the 'Ford direct' route like yourself but had had no joy - a mixture of cars/salespeople not available and/or cars advertised & then 'sold' & general indifference etc' - I got fed up quite frankly - didn't even get my 'foot in the door', metaphorically speaking.

It seems maybe I was lucky as it turned out, judging by your experience. Although no consolation to you now, my buying process was excellent. I bought remotely via phone & was given a good P/Ex value on an already competitively price 7-month old Mondeo diesel (ex short lease car). The handover & presentation of the car was faultless - had original looking Michelin Primacy tyres on & not a mark or piece of fluff ion or in the car. A few months down the line car is still faultless, fun & frugal.

I would have thought it would have worn the fronts first so they have either changed the front to the back or its on its second pair on the front in which case the mileage is suspect.

Carlisle - did you consider rejecting the car and demanding your deposit back?

Something very strange going on - I would have thought that the car should have been on its original set of fronts and rears at this mileage. I would propose several unpleasant scenarios:

1. Mileage suspect as initially stated

2. The car has been thrashed to within an inch of its life

3. The quality OE tyres have been removed to make someone a quiet profit

None of these adequately explain why there were newly fitted front tyres that were significantly worn. I would propose that this might happen if the tyres have been swapped from another vehicle (see theory 3 above). The other reason is that the Ford Direct dealer has purchased part worn tyres to put on a customers car!

I think you would be well within your rights to ask for some proof of the worn tyres' provenance and reject the car if they can't properly explain the situation. Either that or invoice the dealer for the cost of for putting right with OE tyres.

If you think you smell fish it probably is fish.

If you buy the car and you are not 100% happy on day one it is a problem. THEN of something else goes wrong you will kick yourself.

Walk and buy AN other car - there are plenty out there.

Thats strange because I thought I had read on this website that under the Ford Direct scheme Tyres more that half worn were automatically replaced!

I believe that one reason Ford Dealers are not overkeen on the scheme, because their profit margins on Ford Direct cars are slimmer!

This is correct and correct.

Yes the dealers will always try to sell one of their 'own' cars before a Ford Direct car.

I think Likerocks covers most scenarios pretty well. I would just say, that at 14000 miles, a Mondeo would probably need new tyres on the front. All the people I know with Mondeo or Focus, particularly diesels, say their front tyres only last 14-16000 miles. However, the car in question should have about 6mm left on it's OE rear tyres. I am sure Ford haven't sunk to cheapo budgets as OE?? So some underhand business has ocurred.

I had a similar scenario with a Ford Direct Focus.

The rest of the car was 100% perfect exept for some new but ultra-cheap Chinese tyres. I battled with Ford direct about this (as they couldn't get them to balance also, so this was an actual fault), and in the end I won getting a pair of Michelins fitted like the rears.

The basis of my argument was that Ford Direct clearly state on their documentation that they either fit genuine Ford or Ford approved parts, and there is no way some unknown brand of Chinese tyre comes under this category. This ius the third time on this forum I have seen a post like this now.

Strange I have had the same problem but not sorted yet. Have written to consumer protection. My case is as follows.......

I purchased a car in February last year from Evans Halshaw Burnley, which is a Ford Dealer. The car was 9 month old and had only 1786 miles on the clock. The car had been owned by Ford. I paid just short of £18,000 so would have expected it to be in like new in pristine condition. Last week I called in a local garage in Leeds to check out a knocking noise and whilst there they pointed out to me that the front tyres were wearing well down and would need changing shortly. I was shocked at this as I have only driven 7,600 miles since I purchased the car. They then pointed out that the tyres on the rear were budget tyres which again took me by surprise as I can only assume that someone must have taken off the manufacturers tyres replacing them with part worn ones on the front and budget ones on the back. The only other explanation would be that the car has been clocked and the mileage wound back. I have rang Ford Head Office but they have not resolved the matter. I have left messages for the sales manager at Evans Halshaw to ring me but he hasn't. I am a pensioner and cannot afford to be conned in this way.

I have recently replaced all 4 tyres on my 59 Zetec 2.0 tdci. The tyres removed each still had 2.5 or 3 left, after approx 32k miles. So the report of tyres worn at 14k surprises me.

I have just put new 'shoes' on my car. Michellin Primacy 225/45/17 with nearly 30K miles to get down to just legal on a big saloon. For a Mondeo 14K miles is hopeless and 9.4K for Ken0113 is ridiculous. There is a 'rabbit off' somewhere. It is either one of two things, the original tyres have been scrubbed off with misuse, which would not bode well for the rest of the car, or they are high mileage vehicles and tyres have had to be replaced. Either case is not good news. I would pursue the selling dealing for a satisfactory outcome. Why would a main dealer or worse still Ford Direct condone the use of budget tyres when the original equipment is of such better quality? Also it is a bit of a giveaway that all is not what it seems. Good luck. Concrete

I have owned one Ford Direct car and will never own another ford. After a long history of Escorts and Fiestas from 1.3litre to 1.6turbo then 1.7vct and then a 2litre mondeo...

The mondeo was a mk3 2litre LX ford direct 8 months old with 9k on the clock.

with the RAC inspection as per all ford direct cars...

it was the most expensive car i'd ever bought as was going to be a father for the first time 3 months after I bought it. (trading in my Ford Puma.)

It wasn't good......on a trip up to Warwick to visit the in-laws the rear pads stuck on....lots of smoke and interesting comments at the service station.....turned out there was an outstanding recall for sticking calipers....Even though i had the RAC report saying it was free of any outstanding recalls....Imagine if I'd crashed the car with my pregnant wife on board....

Phoned the RAC who said its not our fault, they carried out the inspection on behalf of Ford and Ford saying it wasn't there problem either.....In the end got the recall done...and as a good will gesture they gave the car a free service....after getting home i noticed a puddle of oil under the car.....they had over filled the car with oil...and caused a seal to blow..... etc etc.............they then tried to fix the oil leak and damaged the 2 front doors driving it off the service ramps with the doors open!!....yep its gets worse.....

And as for changing it for another car (as per Ford Direct warrenty).....well they said it had to be from there garage stock and as they didn't have any more LX versions I'd have to pay the extra....in the end got trading standards involved and after 6months got most!!!! of my money back and bought a pre-ford volvo....which i ran for 8 years and over 100k without any brake or oil issues.....

Hence no more fords for me.....thanks very much.........ok ok it just my bad issues with a car that should be good by all accounts....but check theres no outstanding recalls on the car....as RAC are hopeless.....also check the car for damage/paint over spray as again with Ford Direct. they say the car will not be sold with replacement panels but that doesn't include repaired ones!!!

At least two of your problems are nothing to do with Ford but with the dealer who appears to be useless and you'll get that with any make-even Volvo.

Ford Mondeo estate - Ford Direct - jc2

I bought a second hand car from a dealer-told him I thought the tyres hadn't got much tread and when I collected it the following day,the tyres were much better but the car next to the one I purchased,I noticed was now wearing the ones I'd complained about!

I guess it depends what people call "budgets". Ford fit Hankooks in the factory, and were doing in 2004 when my Mondeo was built. Some people think Hankook are a budget brand - they aren't.

16k is about normal for a Mondeo on the front, I don't get much more out of the front tyres on my Mk3 petrol Mondeo, as I do mostly town driving.
