Shanks`s Pony! - Winter boots(not tyres!)Any ideas?? - tdc

I expect many of you will know what it`s like to spend any amount of time in a garage with concrete floors when it`s below freezing.

Does anyone know of winter footwear suitable for insulating feet from cold concrete floors and frozen ground?

Tried standing on wooden boards which helps but is not always practical. Also have worn out two sets of clogs over the years but these were the Dutch souvenir types not easily resoled. Cannot find any decent clogs in the UK but they were common in the fens for land workers years ago, found some relics in junk shops but no size 10s.Haven`t found anything better than wooden clogs to insulate from cold floors/ground,but the souvenir types nip&bruise feet a lot....and no I haven`t driven in them!

Short of getting a flight to Amsterdam to have some made to measure, has anyone any ideas?Footwear also needs to have breathable uppers, once wore ex ww2 paratrooper boots in the snow&ice and they were ridiculously hot but also unwieldy like the souvenir type clogs.Rigger boots,DM`s etc are no good to me,I need the insulation from cold in the sole, any amount of fur lining doesn`t help.

Already wear two pairs of socks and tracky bottoms under jeans so toasty feet would sort me out!

A pair of ladies tights under ones trousers keeps everything toasty.

Get some foam insoles and glue some aluminium foil to both sides - aids the insulation properties no end!

Hello .

I have some dutch clogs at home size 9 to small for you.

I just had a look at a dutch website Habermehl Klompen.

They sell working clogs and deliver by post they are based in Barneveld

Their Tel No.0031 342 413038. They should speak english worth a try.

Mention KLOMPEN.

When I ring Holland I use 08444623232.Pay 40 p to get on to it after that 2p a minute.

Each to their own.....could be a problem if you get caught short after previous nights curry and forgot you were wearing them!

I did try them years ago but found tracky bottoms and another pair of loose fitting trousers/jeans over them trap warm air(so to speak)and therefore keep one warmer.

Wont really help frozen soles of feet though will it?Don`t tell me...pogo stick, mono-cycle,stand on my head, jet back-pack,levitation...?

Thanks Vitesse6,sounds more like it,will give it a try.

Thanks Dutchie, clogs would be favourite, size nines might fit,got some ski boots in a nine which fit even with thick socks. Are the clogs you have all wood or just wooden base? How would I get in touch?

Tel nos very useful thanks, could draw around my foot to get the right size made up.Haven`t found anything better than wooden clogs to insulate my feet from cold ground yet.

I could give them a ring for you tomorrow and find out ,the price is about £18 then postage on top .The clogs I have are all wood one is hanging on the wall outside and one in the shed.

All wood are the best you need size ten. when we where kids we used to put newspaper in our clogs to keep our feet warmer and thick socks. The dutch bargemen where leather clogs ,step ins .

Thanks Dutchie, yes that would be great, much appreciated.I only know a few Dutch words and probably say them wrong, love the accent and enjoyed my two weeks visiting Holland in late 1981.....although ferry from Harwich to the Hook nearly sunk, force 9.Was told a ferry did sink that night but didn`t check.

There are heated insoles used by cyclists run of a couple of batteries really do work well, buy two sets of rechargable batteries and you should have warm feet all day.

Thanks Andy, they sound interesting,I will check them out tomorrow.Sound similar concept to the heated handlebar grips for bikers.

I do a lot of consumer competitions and won a stay at Center Parcs 13 years ago and really took to the underfloor heating in the chalet. It was in selective areas,ie,where you stand to prep food in kitchen,in front of bathroom sink etc.Why do they still build houses with concrete floors and then spend a fortune powering radiators on the walls?

Dutchie has put me in touch with a clog shop in Holland so will be chuffed to buy a new pair.

So this winter I will be modelling...ladies tights by dadbif, foam&aluminium insoles by vitesse6,clogs by Dutchie with heated insoles by Andy Bairsto.

Seriously though,a big thanks to you all for your advice, will post how I get on.If my feet are toasty,I`ll be very happy. So much to do this winter and couldn`t have chosen a worse one.Going down to minus20 they say?!

Remember lying underneath neighbours Escort Estate fitting a new starter motor on concrete floor in the late 1980s when lived down the road from RAF Cottesmore where they recorded -18c for that day...but was younger then!

You be speaking with a high pitched voice singing dutch songs with a german accent.

I like it,that`ll get the neighbours dog howling.

Other arf is excited about me getting some new clogs as before my old ones wore out she used to stand on them while I walked around....daft as a brush!Anyway, enough about my personal life.

Have you got your clogs yet tdc.? Or are you leaving it here in yorkshire we have had no post for nearly two weeks.Any excuse when there is a bit of snow and ice not to turn up.:)

Shanks`s Pony! - Winter boots(not tyres!)Any ideas?? - tdc

Haven`t ordered any yet but had good look at Clog site you gave me,thanks.Found an old pair but very cumbersome and right sole badly worn down on one edge which will put my knee out if I wear them too much...already sorted out left knee!

Reason I`ve stalled is because am wondering whether to get some with flexible tops, rather than all wood, for more comfort?

Shanks`s Pony! - Winter boots(not tyres!)Any ideas?? - Dutchie

They do sell clogs with leather insets they are more comfortable to wear.Give them a ring and explain what you want.Good luck.

Nice article tdc. There you are going back to the past clog dancing together .

Better than watching to much television we need to go back to the past a little bit and live together as communities and forget about the celebs.Roll on Klompen dancing.:)

I recently bought heated mitts at Maplins. On the shelf I noticed they also do heated SOCKS and heated hats. It looks like these are mainly targeting the angling market, but would appear just as useful for your purposes. I think the socks are powered by 3 aa batteries for each foot, so depending on how long you need the heat switched on, it's running cost that needs thinking about.

Just to cheer you up, I could say "think about your first date". You managed to overcome your "cold feet" by asking her out! (unless of course you are a "she")

Thanks for the info,I will check them out, could come in handy .Strangely never once got cold feet during the big freeze and both outside thermometers read -15 one of the times I took a look.Thoroughly enjoyed the raw cold,we went to see the seal colony at Donna Nook and I spent plenty of time outside but never got a chance to try the old skis I was given.Come back snow,it`s too dull now!As soon as it started to thaw and the damp set in,back come the cold feet...weird.Managed to resurrect some old clogs but got my eyes on a new pair.

Like the dating metaphor.....I do occasionally get told off for standing on my other half`s toes, but she does have sticky-out feet!

I`m sure you`re right Dutchie, but I seem to be getting tighter as the years progress!

Recommisioned my old souvenir cloggs for this winter but will get a new pair eventually, have kept the details you kindly researched&provided for me,and Neiltoo`s Hebdon Bridge link as well.

Strangely, the long cold spell didn`t get to my feet this winter even though both outside thermometers read -16 at one stage.Didn`t mind the cold at all but as soon as it turned damp, all the old injury sites flared up.Cold&dry is fine....cold&wet`s a killer!

Well, it’s amazing. The miracle has been done. Hat’s off. Well done, as we know that “hard work always pays off”, after a long struggle with sincere effort it’s done.
