Ford C-MAX - "Engine Malfunction" - Geraldo

I have a re-occurring problem with my 1600cc petrol C-Max. From time to time when I am driving very slowly in a traffic queue, suddenly the alarm goes and the "engine malfunction" warning comes on and the engine starts to hunt ( revs rising and falling ). Switching off and restarting seems to solve the problem but after a couple of minutes its there again until I start driving normally/faster.

The car has only done 5k miles and is 8 months old. My Ford dealer has had a look at it and can't find anything wrong.

I really don't know what to do.

Hello Geraldo.

I would take your car back to the Ford Dealer and leave it their untill this problem has been sorted out.

They should supply you with a courtesy car in the meantime. The car must be still under a warranty.

Regards.

Thanks Dutchie,

But as the Ford dealer has already looked at it and been unable to trace the problem, I can't see them being willing to spend any more time on it. Their line is "sorry, we can't find anything wrong". I was hoping someone else might have had experience of this problem.

Sounds like

vehicle speed sensor

or

Idle control valve...

The car is under gaurantee tell the Ford agents to find and repair the problem or you want your money back or give you a replacement car."I cannot find a fault" is no answer you have to be hard with them if not they will just forget you.

geraldo

do your doors automatically lock when you drive off ? or do you lock your doors when your in traffic ?

You could ask ford to disable and see if the fault still excists.

Ford C-MAX - "Engine Malfunction" - Geraldo

injection doc: the doors don't automatically lock and I don't lock them in traffic.

Geraldo

Try using Shell V power or BP Ultimate petrol for two tankfuls. See what happens...

Thanks madf. I'll let you know in due course.

In my experience with a similar fault on a 1.8TDCi C-Max, Ford dealers have no idea when it comes to intermittent electrical faults.

My car started hesitating, cutting out and displaying 'Engine System Fault" just out of the warranty period. The dealer diagnosed a crankcase sensor, which they replaced at a cost of £250. I drove it home and it cut out again. Got them to try it again, and they had to get a Ford specialist technician in to look at the car, and he suggested it was the wiring loom.

The problem went away when they fiddled with the wiring loom, though it's ocurred a few times since, normally in very damp conditions, so I reckon there's a dodgy connection somewhere.

With your car being in warranty they've got no excuse. Get them to sort it out once and for all. If necessary insist on a courtesy car while they fix it, and ask them to get one of the specialist technicians from Ford to take a look at it, because dealers really don't have a clue in these circumstances.

Sorry geraldo, I read your post as the "Alarm" going off but I guess you mean the dash alarm when the fult light comes on.
as already suggested I would definatley try a branded fuel first, couple of tanks and a little italian tune with some decent fuel.

Having driven 60 miles on the motorway, I parked in my drive and suddenly it happened again. I limped down the road to the dealers and they piled out to look at it. I can't be sure if it has truly been fixed, but a protective rubber cap on an air inlet valve had been chewed, possibly by a mouse !

Ford C-MAX - "Engine Malfunction" - injection doc

glad to hear your fixed, but did the dealer look at it the first time because an air leak should of flagged up in fuel trim % unless the dealer dosen't know what to look for.

Hunting at idle is normally related to air leak/weak mixture and if the garage couldn't find the fault the first time may be they didn't look!

I would put a mouse trap out with choclate in it ! works wonders. last thing you want is a mouse on the loose!
