53mpg from the V6 twin-turbo Jag, when Clarkson wasn't even trying to drive economically for most of the trip ... that's pretty impressive. As was 60+mpg from the Subaru!

i think that this episode has cost me a lot of money as i'm going to look around for xj 2.7td. that mpg was amazing.

A while back my Jag magazine tried John O' Groats to Land's End on one tank in an XJ 2.7d. They pumped up the tyres, took out some excess kit and tweaked the ECU, other than that a bog standard auto.

Not only did they get to Lands End, they then tried to aim for 1,000 miles...and achieved it, just, at Bristol.

One of the better "races" I thought. The balance between not running out fuel but being first to Blackpool made for some interesting tactics and decisions.

However, apart from the excellent figures acheived by the Jaguar, it doesn't speak too well for the accuracy of the fuel computer. JC got to Blackpool with zero range available but then told us there was enough fuel in the tank to go another 100 miles. That is a rather excessive margin of safety re running out of fuel.

It's not that difficult to achieve - on a flat road at 70 I can get 50mpg from my 3-litre twin turbo diesel. The fact is that at that speed, only the smaller of the turbos is working so in effect the engine is only producing about 150bhp. It's only when you accelerate and the larger turbo joins the fray does the economy suffer.

I doubt 70mph even in a Jag demands 150 hp:) More like 35.

Over 60MPG from the Subaru is, quite frankly, unbelievable.

My Legacy does about 40 in the real world. I once tried an economy run for about 180 miles on the motorway and (allowing for the trip computer error), it suggested 45MPG. So to jump to over 60MPG, he must have been doing circa 50MPH the whole way.

The Legacy is NOT an economical 2.0 diesel.

@ a900ss -- apparently James M did just that, he was following the 'tortoise' tactic of trickling along at 50-odd.
