Just yesterday I bought a mint condition ford escort sport. (Not everyones cup of tea i know)

The car sounded and drove pefectly for the first 100 miles of the 110 miles home, however in the last 10 it missed a few beats whilst on the motorway, it felt as though it was running out of fuel and It also began to sound tappety. Also the lights went very dim, as if they were on sidelight when they were not.

Now when I parked up I turned it off and then tried to start it again and it would not turn over fast enough to start (as if the battery had gone flat). I left it for 10 mins and went back, i noticed that one of the HT leads was loose so connected it back up and tried to start it again. This time it started no problem but now it runs very lumpy as if its sometimes running only on 3 cylinders and sounds very tappety, also the light are still dimmer than they should be.

Anyone have any ideas whats up?

Luckily i bought it off a friend and i know that he will take it back and/or repair it for me unfortunately though that would mean driving it back the 110 miles or having to get it transported.

So I'm wondering if this is something I can fix myself? It sounds to me like some kind of valve problem but why are the lights dim?

(PS the level of revs does not effect the brightness of the lights, they are constantly low)

Sounds like you`ve bought yourself what some call "a project"

Connection between battery and starter may be good but other connections could be duff.Give them all a good clean.

Treat car to a good service.Personally I`ve removed and cleaned out fuel tanks of this age.Fit fuel filter.Remove air-filter,checking element and blasting carb with cleaner.Clean out the dreaded breather system and change the plugs.Fit some decent new headlamp bulbs.Change oil&filter,cam-belt,fan belt.Spin alternator by hand while belts off to check if rough.Check wheel bearings for noise and play, front c/v boots and rack gaiters for splits, tyres, suspension arms/joints,brake pipes for corrosion.Do your own MOT!These old motors can be lethal if not checked over properly.

You could have more than one problem here.Have you checked the oil dipstick for level and cleanliness?Clattering from the top end on these is usually an indication of oil starvation/sludging of the oilways. These engines were notorious for this problem.Take the oil filler cap off and take a look inside the cam box.The low power lights and poor starting could be alternator /battery related so you need to check the charging voltage.hth

Thanks for the replies guys but all that has already been done, as I said before the car is in mint condition, its probably one of the best examples left, its like new all over and has a full service history.

Its a good idea to check the voltage so I'll do that today.

My thinking is that something has gone wrond on the top end so i'll take the top off and see.

You haven't put 20w/50 in it,have you?.It pumps up the hydraulic tappets. Go with the Ford recommended oil.

Dim lights indicate alternator problem. Check battery voltage and try charging the battery and see if that helps.

Misfire could be that, with engine running, pull off HT leads one at a time. If no change when you remove one, that is likely to be the suspect cylinder. Removing lead from a good cylinder will make an obvious change to engine running.

No its got the recommended 10-40 oil in it. Ive tried taking the HT leads off and they all seem to be sparking as normal. However as said it still misses a beat occasionally.

I've also had the rocker cover off this morning and I cant see anything wrong in there either.

I did however notice a crack in the exhaust manifold, that couldn't cause this though could it?

Wouldn`t have thought leak from crack in exhaust manifold would be a problem although could fail an MOT if bad enough. How old is exhaust system?,Pop underneath and give boxes a shake to see if any loose internals.

Ignition leads break down with age, check for arcing in the dark...or if you`re brave(or stoopid like me :-/ ) and don`t have a bad heart or pace-maker fitted!,then grab hold of them whilst engine`s running.

It might be a minter but fuel breaks down, fuel systems clagg up over time.Good old British weather allows plenty of condensation in the fuel tank and people will run tanks too low.Have you used fuel cleaner?

I once had a CVH lose power and go "tappety" on me. It turned out, that despite regular oil changes, sludge had built up on the oil pick up in the sump. After removing the sump, and cleaning the pick up, all was well again. This black sludge problem, has been much reduced nowadays with improvements in oils and fuel.

SORTED a mechanic friend of mine diagnosed it simply by listening to it. (He's a good old school mechanic who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and actually knows how an engine works rather than letting a computer do it for him)

One of the hydraulic cam followers had got a tiny speck of dirt inside it which made it not operate as it should.

Thanks for all your help, it seems from what people have said these engines are prone to a few oil related problems!

Its lasted since 1989 so cannot be that bad and glad you have found a proper mechanic.
