Jeep Grand Cherokee - Automatic Gearbox .Sticking in first gear. - peter9022

My wife drives a 53 plate Jeep and finds it often stays in 1st gear for some time after she drives off, I think this may have something to do with the oil temp but does anyone know about the subject and can shed soem light on the problem.

Some problems with auto boxes is the oil needs changing and the filter.

Good clean new oil and a filter works wonders in a auto and this "may" be your problem ,If it's never been done or your unsure have it done for the small price it will cost.

It can also be a sticking valve which is stuck by the oil crud.

See how you get on.

Bigtee is spot on , but also worth a check is, if its a vacum sensed box on a petrol engine vehicle , the vacum pipe from the manifold to the modulator valve needs checking to make sure it hasn't got oil in the vacum pipe or any air leaks.

We did as suggested and had the gearbox oil changed, this made no difference, we then arranged for the imput and output speed sensors to be changed but the mechanic checked the battery charge first and told us this is probabaly the problem, it was only charging a 9 volts, he is changing the battery today, has anyone else had this problem?.. Our Jeep usually gets a good long run once a fortnight but for various reasons we have missed out lately but it looks like it backfired!

Not sure if a fast one is being pulled her..... only charging 9 volts - it's highly unlikely the vehicle would start let alone run, yet you've not mentioned this. Even if the vehicle is used primarily for short runs, the alternator would still charge at full rate as it attempts to replace the lost power from those short runs. A battery only holding 9 volts would not have enough power to trun the engine over.

Please let us know if this action of replacing the battery fix's the gearbox. I suspect it won't....

Re the battery changeover, we had the battery changed by the gearbox specialist ( who comes highly recommended as a genuine guy) and had fixed a similar problem in our nephews much newer jeep last year,he looked at the Jeep and said a code was showing for a Camshaft sensor fault and he knew of other issues with the low battery charge. Searching the websites I found a few comments regarding this fault which a number mentioned created other problems . Having arranged with another garage to have the sensor replaced I found when driving home that the engine management light went off and the gears changed up and down perfectly. It was out in the snow last night and again worked perfectly. needless to say we are not bothering to have the camshaft sensor changed . So having had the gearbox oil changed and a new battery the jeep is running perfectly.
