It occasionally will not change up automatically into top gear and has to be done manually - is this a common fault?

top is normally just a lock up clutch and is controlled by speed. I trust the speedo and ABs are all functioning correctly as this is where some of the signals come from.
It would be advisable to find a indy merc specialist who has good diag kit such as winstar, where they can delve into the depths of diagnostics and live data with ease,as long as they understand what they are doing.
