Ive just got my car back from its diagnostic at a pug/cit specialist.

He told me there were a few problems. 1st ill quickly explain the symptoms.

Sluggish when turning over. Engine revs drop when braking until pedal is lifted. Engine 'over run' a few times when ignition is turned off (this is what set the management light off)

So there was a crank sensor fault. He then tested the battery and told me this was shot pulling only 200amps. He explained that this could cause that fault to show up.

The air flow sensor showed a fault. He told me this was also corroded.

Finally the fuel pressure regulator came up.

Now the car has covered 200,000 miles and if I could keep it on the road at a reasonable price I would.

However the only worry I have is that the cost of parts seems very expensive. He suggested £280ish for the fuel regulator and around £100+ for an airflow sensor.

The battery was bosch silver so was under its 5 year warranty.

My question is do I need to get parts from the dealer only as the mechanic doesnt trust aftermarket parts? If not where should I be looking to get them. I dont want to spend too much as I could get the codes cleared and the problem isnt solved.

Cheers

And a new brake servo as it is probably leaking and causing the drop in revs when you brake. Regards Peter

Fit new battery first, as the other fault codes could be triggered by battery voltage spikes, due to a poor battery or starter requing too many amps.
the running on could be cause by injectors leaking fuel after engine is switched off.
replace battery & run some injector clean through it " comma injector majic" from halfords is quite good, put a bottle in with half a tank and drive till you ned to refill.
Then re-asses the situation.
A leaking servo will not cause the revs to drop as its a diesel and the vacum is pulled from a pump and not the manifold.
Are you asure the pedal box is secure and not twisting when applying the brake pedal ?

as far as I know the servo isnt leaking as when I pump it with the engine off the pedal goes rock hard.

The pedal doesnt twist either, The mechanic thinks the fuel pressure regulator could be linked to it but i dont see how.

I got a new battery (old one still had a year left on warranty)

Its a bigger 630 amp bosch silver plus.

Been quoted around £500 inc parts and labour of around £75

Does this sound reasonable? The pressure regulator is nearly £300!!!

if the injectors are leaking this could cause a drop in fuel pressure causing a fuel pressure related issue to flag.
i would follow the advise I gave you earlier first to see whether it has any effect at all. If it does it could be an injector issue!

thanks for the advise injection doc.

I think im going to struggle getting the mechanic to clear fault codes as he seems pretty struck on the regulating valve being the problem.

Im going to wait a week or 2 and see how the car feels anyway.

Quick question about fuel pumps - I have seen a bosch fuel pump for around £280. Is this likely to be a recondition unit and would it have a new pressure regulator?

Im trying to work out if it would be more cost effective to replace the whole thing?
