Hi, I'm wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction with a problem I'm having...

The engine generally runs fine, but randomly on some journeys with no pattern as to why, the engine will start missing at low revs (between 800 and 2000rpm), if you rev the car up and release the throttle it drops to about 400rpm then returns to around 800ish but fluctuates +/- 100 rpm constantly.

Starting and stopping the engine occasionally solves the problem as the problem is either there at starting, or not. It doesn't randomly start when the engine is running.

Yesterday however, it was messing around when I left work, and was about 5 mins down the road when the engine suddenly stopped completely on me. Re-started straight away and drove for another 30mins with no probs. But, when it came to start the car a couple of hours later, it was just turning over and wouldn't fire. 5 mins later it started fine again and has been out for 50ish miles this morning with no problems...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Danny.

Has the fuel filter been changed recently?

About 6k ago, so I doubt it's that. Been out and bought one today and going to change it just incase (and the car cut out on me again whilst doing 70 down a dual carriage way... - Not impressed).

Just changed the diesel filter, was still fairly clean so not sure if that was the problem... However, I took the in-tank pump out just to have a look at it and noticed that the filter on that was completely covered in dirt and whatnot. I've blown it all down with a compressor and shall see tomorrow if it's any better.

Does anybody know of problems with the filter on the in-tank pump getting bunged up and causing problems? Is it possible that was the cause?

there are certain brands of diesel that seesm to encourage a bacterial infection in the tank causing a black film which is very fine and block pre filters & line filters. I have seen cars with aa little as 9k on the clock with black slim blocking the filters.

there are of course many on this forum who will disagree and say all derv is the same so i will not name the brands more well known for this problem but belive you me it excists. having said that if your cars has done considerable milage you can expect some black sludge around the pre-filter anyway.

there are also one or two makes of cars where the linnings in the fuel tanks are degregating within a few years and causing havoc with CR systems.
