Golf MkIII Diesel - Starting problem - SJC
A friend of mine has a 'R' plate Golf diesel that has begun to exhibit what seems to be a unusual electrical problem.

When switching on the ignition none of the lights on the dashboard operate and the car fails to start. After switching off/on several times the dash lit up and the car started. However once started to trip computer displayed 'OEL'.

This happened having started the car, driven several miles and then parking for 10 minutes. It wouldn't seem to be a battery problem, so am guessing possibly an earth or ECU problem.

Has anybody else had this problem or can suggest where to start looking? Also, any idea what OEL stands for, as it doesn't appear in the owners handbook.

I'd be grateful for any assistance.

OEL means the cars CPU thinks it is due for an oil change service.

It could be either of your suggestions or maybe the ignition switch?

Thanks for the info. It appears that at the last service the ECU wasn't properly reset, hence the OEL message.

The starting problem was caused by the ignition switch, a fairly common problem apparently. A £15 part and 3 hours labour later and the problem is resolved.

Thanks for the help.
