Golf 1.6 SE FSi - Buying advice please! - Siba

Hi

I would like some advice on purchasing a silver Golf 1.6 SE FSi. Has done about 40K miles and the bodywork is in very good condition. The asking price is £5k which I think is prob about right for the car and condition although I am going to offer £4500. It has had two lady owners from new and I know the second owner personally and think she will have looked after it. She has FSH.

There is one thing that worries me. I have been told that there is a light on the dashboard that stays permanently on and will need to be repaired. It is the NOX light and has something to do with the emissions. It has recently been MOT'd and passed the emissions test so it looks like it may just be an electrical fault. Has anyone come across this issue before and could they advise if it is a very serious problem? The seller thinks it might costs about £300 to fix - ouch!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

S

I would ask at a VW main agents I thing they may increase that price of the repair considerable before you splash out its best to check at least you will have a proper top price of the work ,nothing worse than buying a car and having to spend a lot of money on it soon afterwards.

This may give you some insight from HJ car by car breakdown having read it I think I would walk away ar I very much doubt if the car has been run on super shell.

FSIs are proving to be petrol sensitive. Best run on 99 Ron Shell V-Power Super. Head problems reported at 4 years old if not run on high octane petrol. May also suffer failed lambda probes (two at £200 each) and failed cat converters as a result.

More coils failures usually indicated by the emissions (lambda) light on the dash

I would think you are looking at a repair bill around £2k

Andy

Thanks very much for your response. As it turned out, my offer was rejected as a dealership valued the car at nearer £6k so I walked away.

Cheers again,S
