Volvo 850 petrol auto estate - twang on braking - bakeart

My Volvo 850 sometimes "twangs" from the front end when braking-- particularly when turning in to a parking space for example, but also sometimes when braking in a straight line. I get a bit of feedback through the pedal so suspect the abs, perhaps the pump.
Has anyone had, and solved, a similar problem?

I suspect that one of the sliding caliper pins is sticking causing the caliper to cockle slightly and the twang is when is moves slightly further. When the pads are removed if they are worn in a taper its normally a siezed slider.
The only other posibitlty is if the pedal is pulsing its could be a reluctor ring has a hair line crack causing the pedal to pulse.
I have experienced top suspensions mounts failing but you wouldn't normally feel that through the pedal
