Rover 75 - HPI car marked as scrapped problem - Demon

I've just bought an MG ZT after owning a Rover 75 for just over two years. I was planning on part-exing the Rover as part of the deal, but when I went to pick up the ZT, the dealer ran a HPI check on my Rover and it came up with "Vehicle recorded as DVLA SCRAPPED MARKER On condition alert register". No mention of Cat A/B/C/D. Now this came as quite a shock to me as I was given a clear HPI report with the car when bought over two years ago. The car has behaved impeccably and is actually the first car I ever owned that never required a breakdown call out, and I've taken it from 84-122k. Through two MOTS and several services with no unusual or worrying repirs required and bodywork is all consitent with age with no signs of respray. So the part-ex didn't happen and I now have two cars!

I contacted the DVLA today who confirmed that the car has NOT ever been scrapped, and on digging out old documents today can see that the marker was put on 3 DAYS after the dealer hpi'd it, which suggests a clerical error has been made during document transfer - but as I say, the DVLA have never recorded it as being scrapped. I am now intending to sell the car privately but first need to find out how to clear this marker, and now can't seem to find a definitive answer as to who the authority on this is. If anybody has any ideas of which direction I should take I would be very grateful as I now have 10 metres of car taking up space in what is most definitely a 'parking wars' street...! Thank you.

HPI get their information directly from the insurers so you need to call them on 0845 300 8905 to find out who supplied it.

If you provide the registration they will tell you who posted the marker. You then need to write to them to get details and have it removed if it is inaccurate - you cannot remove it if it is accurate.

They need to remove it not just with HPI but also with Autocheck (Experian) and anyone else they have lodged it with (ask them).

I can do all this for you but because of the administration involved there would be a charge (£125 plus VAT). If you wish me to act you need to come back to me and I need the registration number and your details.

Just a follow up on this just in case anybody encounters a similar issue (thank you for the offer of help from the previous poster btw :) ...) a member of the 75/ZT owners club, who works in the motor trade, ran his own HPI check on it for me, gave me the details to contact HPI HPI. I called them and they said they confirm with the DVLA that the marker was a mistake, and remove the marker from their system within 5 working days. They called back less than 24 hours later and confirmed it had now been removed. The guy at the owners club then ran another check for me, and confirmed it was now clear. A bit annoying as it now means I have to go through the hassle of selling the car, but problem solved :)

Demon - thanks for your message. I am in a very similar situation at the moment. (This is my first post on this forum, so sorry to jump right in).

I bought a Jazz just over 2 years ago and wanted to part ex it for a newer Yaris. When I bought the Jazz, 2 years ago, I paid for 2 checks: 1 online and 1 over the phone. Both checks came back fine so I bought the Jazz.

Yesterday I went over to the garage to pay the remaining amount on the Yaris and when the garage did a HPI check on my Jazz it came up with VEHICLE RECORDED AS DVLA SCRAPPED MARKER ON CONDITION ALERT REGISTER. No mention of CAT A/B/C/D anywhere.

When I got home later I paid for another check (cost me a tenner) and my car came back fine again.

I am really confused.

Needless to say the garage doesnt want to pay me the originally agreed part ex price for my Jazz after seeing the HPI check.

Demon can I ask who you contacted and how you contacted them (to get this sorted)?

Are you sure the garage is not trying it on not unheard of,take your paperwork to them and ask them to disprove it.You have the log book unmarked with no restrictions on it regarding the cars condition.

Andy thanks for your reply.

The garage actually gave me a print out of the hpi check so they werent trying it on (well not in an obvious way anyway). They actually contacted hpi this morning and hpi spoke to the dvla and within an hour the dvla sorted it out!

The garage ran another hpi check this afternoon and my car came back all clear.

Nobody seems to know what has happened exactly and why my car was registered as scrapped..... I dont think I will ever find out.

I am so happy it got sorted!
