Petrol or diesel engined?

I suspect this sounds like a petrol one as the early diesels didn't have cats.
My first port of call would be , " has it got the right grade of engine oil " it could be jacking up the lifters & loosing power and when it stalls the oil pressure has gone and the tappets release. 5/30 is a must in these !
2nd port of call would be fuel pump current consumption, if its too high the relay overheats & cuts out but they normally kick back in on restart. A tired pump or faulty fuel pressure reg causing too higher pressure can load the pump. Crank sensors are also a known issue on the early models.

hi guys. its petrol yea. dont know if this helps but when i got my cat changed the mechanic said that it was very dirty?? its like total loss of power. u know its away to happen as the revs start decreasing on the rpm counter. then it cuts out. after few mins it starts again. the relay sounds promising.
