The true costs of learning to drive - motorcityman

Saw a really interesting story below on motoring.yell.com (I do work at Yell, but not on their websites) earlier on how much it costs to learn to drive these days - it is certainly a lot different to when I was learning about 12 years ago! I also had no idea it differed so much from region to region - who would have thought Scotland was the most expensive place to learn?! The actual article is here if anyone is interested... www.yell.com/motoring/blog/yell-com-exposes-true-c.../

Howard Redwood of the Driving Instructors Association says “......learning to drive with siblings, spouses or relatives can result in unintentional bad habits that can mean the difference between passing and failing, it’s best to go with the pros having shopped around.” Well he would say that wouldn't he.

Seems to be one of those surveys that states the obvious and claims it's news.

Hmmmmm,

Having just put two weans through the test, mostly using an instructor, with a little "experience" driving with ourselves, they , the instructors can be worth the money.

Its 30 plus years since i sat my test and I specifically told the children that I did not want them picking up any irregular/ driving test fail type habits I may have required.

I also chimfed at them to put a bit of pressure on the instructor as to how soon they could sit the test.

But I would be absolutly spitting mad at any attempt to curtail parents or experienced friends giving lessons, after all that is why there is a driving test, yes?

Anyway, hey it worked.

Cheers

I'd have to say personally I disgaree, I think it should strictly be only qualified ADI's who can legally instruct. Just too little standard skillset and knowledge, and too much personalised interpretation of the way things should be done with 'standard' drivers. I am not an instructor and I have no vested interests, but I'd never have considered being taught by family, except of course for the inevitable first 'taste' in an empty car park. For starters, most friends/family don't have dual controls fitted, and that should be a legeal must-have for any learner vehicle surely!

£1000 to learn to drive!

It cost me 16 x 87.5p (17/6 in old money) + test Fee = <£20

You are right, the cost of learning to drive is going up,and unfortunately will continue to do so,as a driving instructor in Barnsley South Yorkshire,i have for the first time in ages and ages increased my hourly rates to new starters, simply because it costs a fortune to run and maintain a driving school car,It is'nt a decision that i made easily but if you think it's expensive think how much it would cost to put your 17 year old son or daughter on your insurance and learn them yourself giving up about 40 hours of your time, paying the increased insurance premiums, using your own fuel and maintaining your own car,or let them buy their own car and insure it,tax it and maintain it themselves, then work out how much less it costs to learn with an instructor!.

bighaggis, I'll assume you posted to add to the discussion rather than a free plug ;-)

I'm teaching my 17yo son to drive. We already had the car (an old one of little value) so additional maintenance/running costs are minimal. Insurance for five months has been £350. Fuel costs? I don't know, but I guess he must have driven close to about 1,500 miles so far, so say £250. But a lot of his lessons are combined with journeys we would have made anyway with me driving (i.e. dad's taxi service). So we are looking at £600, which compares favourably with 40 hours with you at c£700. However, I don't know of any recommended instructor on the South Coast giving lessons as cheap as you!

A long time ago but I was taught to drive by my father (At the time a rather rare beast. Police class 1 driver.) All on normal family trips bar the first couple on handling the controls. Then a couple of lessons on passing the test by an instructor.

I'm glad to say that I still drive by the system (IAM pass after a couple of hours with observer). Perhaps not how to pass the test but tried and tested.
