Hope I'm not being fat-ist.

Remember about a year ago when BSM replaced all their driving school Corsas with Fiat 500s. It now seems that government driving examiners are too fat to get in them, so BSM are going back to Corsas

Not fattist at all - fact is if you want to build a short car you can't have a large boot and lots of rear legroom.

Seems the 500 has neither and if you are tall how do you sit in the back of one? My dad heard similar complaints about the new Mini.

BSM should accomadate for most motorist and the focus/Astra is the answer not poxy small dustbins on 4x wheels were not all 5ft 1................

A simple case of fashion over common sense

Not much sense in teaching people to drive in a motor that's probably half the size of what they'll actually end up driving! Is this the reason why so many people can't park or negotiate slightly tight spaces?!!

Doesn't it make sense to learn in something that's easy to drive and then move to a larger car when you have more experience?

When learning to drive (even in a small car) it can challenging to steering around roundabouts etc., a smaller car would allow for more progress and safety.

It doesn't matter how big a car is, parking is exactly the same. You just need to park the car within a few inches of the kerb. I suspect that a lot of learners could be better at parking than some more experienced drivers.

Agreed, how many on here learned to drive on original Minis and Metros?

Me? 1968 Hillman Hunter!

Agreed. The point of the whole story has slightly got lost in the thread. It wasn't about whether the car was a good 'un to learn in, it was about the fact the government examiners are fat and can't get in a 500. So surely the solution to the problem is for the overweight offenders to go on a diet; it would be good for them anyway, and BSM would be acble to keep their cars

I think the problem is not 'fat' examiners but when a second examiner has to ride in the back there is not enough room in small motors like the 500.

Under normal 'civi' street situations the driver and/or passenger would shift forward a little to give the rear seat occupants the room required, however, on a driving test that is not practical.

I suspect the real reason they've changed back is due to Vauxhall offering them incredible deals. I remember when they switched to FIAT didn't they have a choice of a 500 or a Grande Punto? I've definitely seen Puntos labelled up as BSM cars. Surely the fat instructors could just change for them?

Agreed, BSM stopped using Vauxhall due to the deal between then changing. GM must have been quite keen to get the business back and I suspect they'll be giving them free or at an amazing low cost.
