A lot of people are rushing to buy cars now to avoid the VAT increase, but are they really getting a bargin? As the demand is higher, dealers can probably push prices up a bit. When the VAT goes up nobody will buy a car unless there are good offers, so next year it can see them doing everything they can to sell a car. Keeping the prices a bit higher now will also allow them more flexibility when VAT goes up. What do people think? Will January be a good time to buy?

The VAT increase will increase the prices by approx 2.1%, which isn't really a huge difference. I want to buy a car next year, so I'm hoping that I can get a good deal. I only paid 15% VAT on the last car I bought.

2011 models appearing, Sept was not a buoyant month - dead months of November & December are nigh.

I would watch the HJ Broker offers and newspaper ads................. and buy before January

What are you looking for and the budget? Do you have a T/I - all of this affects what you can look at.

Something relatively small, economical, and non-sporty. There isn't really a budget, but the cars I'm looking at are between £9000 and £14000. They are the full prices though, so there will be some discount.

It's likely to be either a 500 TwinAir (out this month I think), a 500 1.2, or an i10. If I don't like the TwinAir then I may stick with what I've got for a while. Most small cars seem to be a load of rubbish :(. The 500 is reasonable, but it's a lot of money.

I don't want to get a car until next year. It's unlikely that I will buy a 2011 model though, I don't think there are any good/suitable small cars coming out next year.

As much as I regret the recession and the impact that the bankers have had on our economy I was able to snap up a real bargain from a Toyota main dealer in November 2008. An 18 month old Avensis Tx3 (petrol) from a Mr T dealer fully loaded with just 5k on the clock direct from the factory in Derbyshire for just £8k. Best investment I've made in a long time. Hasn't missed a beat since I boought it in immaculent condition.

Thank you Gordon.........
