Hello,
I need some advice for my Espace that broke down today.

Renault Espace 2.0 Priviledge Y reg. Auto.

It seems to be the automatic gearbox, it won't go forward but will engage reverse. Prior to this we had an electrical sign appear for a few weeks when I accelerated the gearbox got stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear and the sign would come on. This mainly happened when the engine was cold.
Really hoping this is not a major fault as i know it will cost an arm and a leg to fix.

sad to say its game over! when the light comes on the gearbox has gone to defaut mode and has been driving around in 3rd gear! it will have burnt out. when the light comes on it means there is a fault which needs attention and its just a means of getting home or to the side of the road. No doubt you found when the light was on it felt like the power was down but infact it was stuck in one gear !!!!
On renaults it can be something as simple as a brake light bulb that causes the gearbox to go to limp mode ! as I have repaired many of these auto boxes I know only too well I have had brake light bulbs fitted wrong or wrong bulbs causing a feed back throwing the box into default as the box relies on a signal from the brake lights amongst many others.
you may well find a replacement box prohibitive in cost!! Ouch

Thanks for your prompt reply. I know it stays in the same gear once the error light comes on, but I stop and restart and its fine after that. When the car is warmed up it is absolutely fine, no problems with the gears at all.

My hubby thought it might be the torque or seals, pressure problem- solinoid possibly?

I'll know it fate once I arrange its towing to a garage in the next few days or I could drive in reverse to the garage!
