hire car - alledged speeding fine in Australia - pedrogonzalez

Hello I am new to this but feel I need to get some advice. I have recently returned from holiday in Victoria Australia and have now received a traffic infringement notice for alledgedly travelling at 57mph in a 50 mph area. in a hire car. I do not beleive I was speeding over this limit so my questions are what can I do about it,And they expect me to pay $239 which is about £ 145.00 and they mention 3 de-merit points. What should I do and why is the fine so much and can they put points on my UK licence.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

It's at times like this we need a LucyOZ. Did the ticket come direct or through the hire company? If it came via the hire company they will probably extract the fine through your credir card whether you like it or not.

the infringement notice came to my son in law who,s name was on the rental agreement. He has returned it naming me quite rightly as the driver. as wasand additional driver.

thanks

VOB is right - if you hired the vehicle then the fine is likely to be deducted from your card - but unless you have an Australian licence the points cannot be applied unless you emigrate and change to an Australian licence.

Unless you are a frequent visito to Australia the points will obviously make no difference to yo holding a UK licence. Likewise the penalty unless of course they deduct it from a credit card like previously mentioned. However, I suspect it was the Nephew who used a credit card who retrospectively have named you to be the driver at the time of the alleged offence simular to the obligation under S.172 of RTA here. Therefore, he have offloaded the burden and it would be down to thier authorities to write to yourself with the alleged offence.

If they follow up by writing to you I would be writing back asking for evidence to support the alleged offence in case of future visits to Oz etc.
