VW Eos - Gearbox - synchromesh fault - cliffc

My 11 month old VW Eos 2.0 SE Tdi has a fault affecting the 5th gear synchromesh. The car was purchased new by me and has covered 8000 miles. My dealer proposes to remove the gearbox and replace the synchromesh. Is it normal to strip and repair or should I expect a replacement gearbox?

I suspect a synchro cone has cracked and I would press for a replacement gearbox and contact VW HQ to insist on this. These cones are hardened high quality steel and can shed highly abrasive particles if they break. Normally VW garages do not take on GB stripe downs and ship them off to a GB specialist.
