Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1996 Nreg - Engine won't shut down - Ben306

hi,

Can anyone help, my engine keeps running after removing the key from the ignition. I have seen some threads that hint at a solenoid problem. Can anyone describe this for me and tell me if it is a difficult and/or expensive fix.

Could it be anything else? At the moment the only thing to shut off the engine is stalling it, Bye Bye clutch!

thanks

yes chances are it is the solenoid. it works from the key and opens the fuelline to the pump or closes it when turning of the key. its not un-common for them to go.

it is fitted to the fuel pump and easy to remove. the real name for it is a fuel stop valve.

undo the screws on it withdraw the stop valve and recover the sealing washer, 0 ring. recover the solenoid plunger and spring if they remain in the pump.

limeted hand room when working but easy enough. should be of in 15 mins.

but before removing check the wireing conector to it.

hi,

Thanks for your help. My pump is the Lucas type with an imobiliser, oh joy. There is a metal plate over where i think the valve is.

  1. Any other thiings that could be causing the fault that I can check before tackling the solenoid?
  2. If it is the solenoid do you know of how to fix the problem? Will i need yto buy a new pump and recalibrate the imobiliser? Can I (more likely a garage) cut off the metal shield?

Many thanks for your help, Oh how I love my peugeot!!

Oh dear, you have a problem then, is there a plug and socket in the lead? if so try disconnecting it, if it still runs it will be the solonoid. Don't know what sort of job it is to get at it on the Lucas but I know its a pig on the Bosch, the pump has to be removed, might be easier just t fit another pump, preferably a Bosch from a car without a keypad, if you fit a Bosch one you will need the injector pipes too.

You could fit an extra external fuel cut-off solenoid like Ebay Item No 390248176893.

Fit to the fuel line as close as possible to the pump & wire it in parallel to the existing cut off solenoid.

I've got no experience of this myself but I've herad this can be caused by leaks from the brake servo. Apparently when the seals leak the brake fluid is drawn into the engine and acts as a fuel. Check if the brake level is still where it should be.

It is a pain to get too, and will take you quite a while as it's meant to make it hard to prevent someone stealing your pride and joy. You can do it in situ I would not recommend changing the pump at all as it's extra expense, timing also and would probably require different injectors not to mention cambelt kit and also the chance that your replacment may not be as good as your original pump (if secondhand). Stick to what you know remove the pipes, brackets, if you need to remove the screws that the pump pipes screw to, be careful not to loose the valve and spring behind or you will have a misfire at idle, last time I did one I used a hecksaw and die grinder to remove the bracket permantly, if you do that be careful to seal the pipe connectors so no swarf can get in.

Fitting an external valve as dieselnut suggests is a good idea.

i'd be surprised if the valve stopped the engine straight away but if it did it would save a lot of time.
